What Backlinks Are and How to Get Your First Links to Your Local Business Site
A backlink is a vote. When a respectable site mentions you with a link, Google sees that someone vouches for you. Here is how a local business in Romania gets its first clean votes — no schemes, no money wasted on useless directories.
You have a clean site, the photos look good, the copy is well written. And yet, when you google exactly your service in your town, other people show up ahead of you — firms with uglier, older, slower sites. The logical question is "why them and not me?" Often the answer isn't on your site at all, it's outside it: other people are talking about your competitors, linking to them, and Google counts those mentions as recommendations. That, in short, is the story of backlinks.
What a backlink actually is
A backlink is a link from another site to yours. That's it. If the local paper writes about your clinic opening and includes your website address, that's a backlink. If a supplier lists you on their "partners" page, same thing.
Google treats each such link as a vote of trust. The logic is simple: if a serious site links to you, you're probably worth taking seriously. A site with zero outside links is like a firm nobody recommends — it might be excellent, but nobody vouches for it.
Two things matter far more than the number of links:
- Who links to you — a link from the city hall, a county newspaper, or the chamber of commerce is worth dozens of links from obscure sites.
- Whether it's relevant to you — a link from an article about dental clinics in Cluj means a lot for a dentist. A link from a random crypto blog means almost nothing.
Authority through links is a different SEO pillar from the rest. In local SEO you work on what's on your page and your Google profile. With backlinks you work on what *others* say about you — and you control that less, which is exactly why it counts.
Why it matters for a local firm, not just big sites
There's a myth that links are a battle fought only by large stores and publications. False. Locally, the field is far emptier. A plumber in Cluj-Napoca isn't up against thousands of sites, but ten or fifteen local firms, most of which have no quality links at all. A few clean mentions can put you ahead of them.
There's another, less obvious reason: links bring people, not just ranking. A local-paper article linking to you is read by locals — exactly your customers. A link is useful even if Google didn't count it at all.
How to get your first clean links
The basic rule: a good backlink is *earned* or *politely asked for*, not bought off some group. Here's where to start, in order of effort.
1. The directories that actually matter. Not dozens of junk directories, but the serious, locally relevant ones: your Google profile (see what Google Business Profile is), the yellow pages, your professional association's catalog, the chamber of commerce. Fill them in identically — same name, same address, same phone everywhere.
2. Your suppliers and partners. Whoever sells you goods, does your accounting, works with you. Many firms have a "partners" or "clients" page and are happy to add you if you ask. It's the easiest link in the world, and it's relevant.
3. Local press and neighborhood blogs. You open a new location, run a seasonal discount, sponsor the kids' team down the street — these are real reasons a local site would mention you. Send a short email with a photo and your link. Not everyone replies, but some do.
4. Associations and events. Are you a member of a trade association? Did you attend a local fair? Many such organizations keep member or exhibitor lists with links. Ask to be included.
5. Content worth linking to. A clear guide — "what a paint job costs in Cluj in 2026," "what documents you need for a mediator" — is the kind of page others pass along because it helps. It's the hardest link to earn, but also the most durable.
What to NEVER do
This is where most money and most peace of mind get lost. Avoid:
- The "500 backlinks – 10 €" packages — they're links from junk sites, and Google ignores or even penalizes them.
- Mechanical exchanges — "I'll link to you, you link to me" across dozens of unrelated sites. Google recognizes the pattern.
- Spam comments on forums with your link pasted everywhere. It helps no one and reeks of desperation.
Nobody can promise you "number 1 on Google," and anyone who promises it through bought backlinks is selling you a risk, not a result. One good link a month, month after month, beats a thousand bad ones in a week.
What it actually costs
Clean backlinks aren't bought with a price tag. Their real cost is the time to ask and build relationships. What's on us is the foundation: a site worth linking to and pages that genuinely help people.
| Service | Price |
|---|---|
| Landing page | €290–490 |
| Presentation site | €490–890 |
| Online store | from €690 |
| Maintenance | from €29/month |
| AEO / GEO | from €290 |

Frequently asked questions
How many backlinks do I need to rank higher in Google?+
There's no magic number, and anyone who gives you one is misleading you. Quality matters far more than quantity: 5–10 clean links from serious, locally relevant sites are worth more than hundreds from junk directories. Local competition is small, so even a few good mentions can count.
Can I buy backlinks? I see very cheap offers.+
You can, but it's a bad idea. "500 links for 10 €" packages come from worthless sites that Google ignores or even penalizes. You risk doing more harm than good. Good backlinks are earned or asked for, not bought by the kilo.
How long until I see an effect from backlinks?+
Honestly: not overnight. Google needs time to find the links and factor them in, and the effect accumulates over months, not days. The good news is that a good link stays there and keeps working for you, unlike an ad that stops the moment you stop paying.
Is a backlink the same thing as local SEO?+
No, they're different pillars that complement each other. Local SEO is mainly your Google profile, reviews, and business info (name, address, phone). Backlinks are about authority — what other sites say about you. You need both; you can read more in our article on local SEO.
