How to Choose the Right Font for Your Website: Readability, Tone and Professionalism

A font isn't a matter of taste — it's a matter of reading. Here's how to pair two fonts, what sizes keep text legible on a phone, and which free fonts you can use without legal worries.

You open two websites selling the exact same thing. One reads easily, feels settled, earns your trust. The other makes you squint — the letters are cramped, the heading looks like a 2009 Word document. The difference, more often than not, isn't the colors or the copy. It's the font. It's the first design decision the reader feels before reading a single word.

The right font isn't picked for how „pretty" it looks in isolation, but by one question: does it read easily on a phone, at 10 p.m., from an arm's length away? Because that small screen is exactly where customers are won or lost.

One font for text, one for headings — and that's it

The rule we apply to every site: two fonts maximum. One for body text (paragraphs, lists, prices), one for headings. More fonts on the same page don't look creative — they look messy, like a classified ad.

The two fonts should complement each other, not resemble each other. Too similar, and the eye sees no hierarchy — the page feels flat. Too different, and they clash. The safe combination that works for almost any kind of business:

  • Headings with character — a font with personality, heavier or with distinct shapes, that sets the tone (a salon, a restaurant and a lawyer all want different tones)
  • Neutral, clean text — an unadorned font for paragraphs, built to be read at length, not to be noticed

If you want zero risk of getting it wrong, use a single font across the whole page, varying only weight and size. Many modern, understated sites look exactly like this and work flawlessly.

Serif or sans-serif: what each one says about you

The two big families send different signals, even if the reader never names them consciously:

  • Sans-serif (letters without „feet," like Arial) — modern, clean, direct. Works for most businesses: services, tech, salons, online shops. It's also the most legible on screen.
  • Serif (letters with fine finishing strokes) — tradition, seriousness, authority. A fit for lawyers, notaries, clinics, brands that sell trust and experience.

There's no „better," only right for your tone. A law firm with a playful font loses credibility. A pastry shop with a rigid, corporate font loses warmth.

Size matters more than the choice of font

The most common flaw isn't the wrong font — it's a font that's too small. The reference points we work by:

  • Body text: 16px minimum, ideally 17–18px. Below 16px, people squint on their phones and leave.
  • Lines not too long — a paragraph stretched across a full wide screen tires the eye; aim for 60–75 characters per line.
  • Line spacing of roughly 1.5 — cramped text is hard to follow.
  • Good contrast — light-grey text on white feels „elegant" in your head but is exhausting to read. Use black or very dark grey on white.

An average font used correctly always beats a „brilliant" one that's cramped and too small.

Free fonts you can use without legal worries

Here's a real trap: not every font you find online can legally go on a website. Fonts from Word or other sites may have licenses that don't cover web use. The good news: hundreds of professional, free fonts explicitly licensed for web live on Google Fonts. They're free for commercial use, load quickly, and cover Romanian diacritics (ă, â, î, ș, ț) — a detail many „pretty" fonts miss.

Safe combinations to start from:

Salon / lifestylePlayfair DisplayLato
Lawyer / clinicMerriweatherSource Sans

Don't take these as law — they're verified starting points, not one-size recipes. What matters is the principle behind them: one font for character, one for reading, both with diacritics, both web-licensed.

Mistakes that cost you

  • Too many fonts — three or four styles on a page make it look amateur.
  • A font without diacritics — a misspelled name, or letters that jump out of line, look careless to a Romanian audience.
  • Fonts that load slowly — an exotic, poorly hosted font delays the page; on a phone, every half-second counts.
  • Text too small „to fit everything" — if it can't be read, it doesn't matter what it says.

The rule we work by: the font should disappear. When the reader notices how beautiful the font is, something is off. When they read easily and never think about it, it's exactly right.

Frequently asked questions

How many fonts should I use on a website?+

Two maximum: one for headings and one for body text. You can even use a single font, varying weight and size. More than two make the page look messy and amateur.

Can I use any free font I find online?+

No. Many „free" fonts have licenses that don't cover use on a website. The safe route is Google Fonts: hundreds of fonts explicitly licensed for web, free for commercial use, with support for Romanian diacritics.

What text size reads well on a phone?+

16px minimum for body text, ideally 17–18px. Below 16px people squint on the small screen and leave. Add line spacing of about 1.5 and good contrast.

Serif or sans-serif — which is better?+

Neither is „better" in general. Sans-serif (no feet) is modern, clean and highly legible on screen, a fit for most businesses. Serif conveys tradition and authority, suited to lawyers, notaries, clinics. Choose based on your brand's tone.

Why do diacritics matter when choosing a font?+

For a Romanian audience, a font that doesn't render ă, â, î, ș, ț correctly looks careless — letters jump out of line or go missing. Always check that your chosen font fully supports diacritics before putting it on the site.
