How to Show Up in the Local Pack: Google's Top 3 Map Results

The factors that decide which businesses land in Google's 3-result map box, and what you can actually control as a local business owner.

When someone searches Google for „barber near me" or „dentist in Cluj", the first thing they see isn't a website. It's a box with a map and three businesses. That's the Local Pack (the „3-result map box"). For a local business, those three spots are the difference between a phone that rings and a phone that stays silent.

The good news: it isn't magic or a lottery. Google uses a few fairly clear signals to pick those three. The less comfortable news: you cannot guarantee the #1 spot, and anyone who promises that is lying to you. What you can do is tick off, one by one, the factors Google actually weighs. In this article I'll show you exactly what they are and where to start.

What the Local Pack is and why it matters so much

The Local Pack is the box with a map and three businesses that appears at the top, ahead of the „classic" results, for searches with local intent: „coffee near me", „plumber in Cluj", „nail salon downtown". Below the three sits a „More places" link that leads to Google Maps.

It matters enormously because most people searching for a local service want to call or go today, not next week. They stop at these three results: they call, get directions, check reviews. If you're not there, you effectively don't exist for that customer, even if you have the best website in town.

Remember: the Local Pack is powered by your Google Business Profile, not directly by your website. The site helps, but the profile is the engine.

The 3 factors Google weighs

Google states openly that local ranking rests on three things:

  • Relevance — how well your profile matches what the person searched. Here the correct business category, description and listed services matter.
  • Distance — how close you are to where they're searching (or the area they named). You can't control this, but you can offset it with relevance and prominence.
  • Prominence — how „well-known" the business appears: reviews, mentions on other sites, a solid website, consistent activity.

The key is that you can't move the building closer to the customer, but you can work hard on relevance and prominence. That's where the spot in the box is won or lost. Most competitors neglect exactly these two areas, which is a real opportunity for you.

The Google Business Profile: the foundation everything sits on

Without a complete, verified Google Business Profile, you won't appear in the Local Pack. Full stop. So the first step is to claim it (business.google.com) and verify it.

Then fill it out as if you were paying for every empty field:

  • The correct primary category, plus relevant secondary categories.
  • Name, address and phone identical everywhere online (same format).
  • Opening hours, including holidays.
  • Clear services and descriptions, using the words customers actually use.
  • Real photos, lots of them: exterior, interior, team, work.

A half-empty profile tells Google the business is „less serious" than a complete one. It's the cheapest, fastest lever you have — it costs nothing but an hour of attention.

Reviews: the fuel that lifts you up the rankings

Reviews are one of the strongest prominence signals for the Local Pack. Three things matter together: the number of reviews, the average rating, and how recent they are.

What works honestly:

  • Ask every happy customer for a review, on the spot or via a direct link sent on WhatsApp.
  • Reply to every review, the good and the bad. Google sees the activity, and customers see that you care.
  • Keep a steady pace. Ten reviews in one day then silence for six months looks suspicious.

What NOT to do: don't buy fake reviews and don't post reviews of yourself. Google detects them, and the risk is a suspended profile. A slow, genuine flow always beats an artificial spike.

Your website, NAP signals and local pages

The website doesn't appear directly in the Local Pack, but it supports your profile's prominence and relevance. A few things that concretely help:

  • Consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) identical on your site, on Google Business and in directories (Facebook, local listings, etc.). Mismatches confuse Google.
  • A clear page for each town or area you serve, with real content, not just the town name swapped out.
  • A fast, mobile-friendly site, because most local searches come from phones.
  • Structured data (LocalBusiness schema) that clearly tells Google who and where you are.

At MPO Web Studio we build sites local-first from the start: correct NAP, per-town pages, schema and mobile speed included. We can prepare a free demo of your site before you pay anything, so you can see the difference on your own case.

What to do in the next 7 days

You don't need a complex strategy to start. A one-week plan:

  • Day 1-2: claim and verify your Google Business Profile, fill in every field and upload 15-20 real photos.
  • Day 3: check NAP everywhere and fix any mismatches.
  • Day 4-5: send a review link to your last 20 happy customers.
  • Day 6: reply to all existing reviews.
  • Day 7: publish a post on the profile (an offer, news, a recent job).

Then repeat monthly. Local ranking is a marathon, not a sprint, but these simple moves already put you ahead of most competitors who haven't even completed their profile.

Frequently asked questions

How long until I show up in the Local Pack?+

It depends on the competition and your starting point. A new, complete profile in a small town can appear within a few weeks. In a big city with strong competition, it can take several months of steady work on reviews and relevance. No one can guarantee an exact timeline, and anyone who does is overpromising.

Can I pay to appear in the 3-result box?+

Not directly for the organic Local Pack results. Google Ads can display a „Sponsored" ad above or within the map, but that's paid and marked as such. The organic spot among the three results is earned through the factors in this article, not by paying Google.

Does it matter whether I have a physical location?+

Yes. The Local Pack is designed for businesses with a location or a service area. If you go to the customer (plumber, cleaning), you can set a „service area" and hide the address. If you have no physical location and don't visit customers, profile eligibility is limited.

Why does my competitor show up when my website is better?+

Because the Local Pack relies on the Google Business Profile, not on how pretty your website is. Your competitor likely has more reviews, a more complete profile, or consistent NAP. A good site helps prominence, but it doesn't replace a well-maintained profile.

Do old reviews still count?+

Yes, but freshness matters too. A steady flow of recent reviews shows Google the business is active. Don't delete good old reviews; keep adding new ones. A regular rhythm is worth more than a spike followed by a long silence.
