Business-name domain vs. keyword domain: which should you pick?

Should your website be yourbrand.com or plumber-in-town.com? Here's what actually matters for Google, for customers, and for the long run.

You've found the perfect name for your business, and now you're stuck on a step that feels small: which domain do you buy? The one with your business name — like `lupu-barbers.com` — or the one stuffed with keywords, like `barber-shop-cluj.com`, so you look closer to what people type into Google?

It's a fair question, because a domain is hard to change later. It goes on business cards, on Google Maps, on your hosting invoice, into customers' heads. The good news: the answer isn't an SEO lottery, it's a branding decision with a few clear rules. Let's go through them, with no myths and no "guaranteed #1 on Google" promises.

What a keyword domain used to mean (and why it's different now)

Years ago, an exact-match domain — literally the search phrase, `heating-repair-town.com` — really did give you a small edge in Google. People bought domains just to grab that bonus.

Google fixed that a long time ago. Today the keyword in your domain doesn't, on its own, earn you a better position. What matters are real things: the content on the page, speed, reviews, links pointing to your site, your Google Business profile.

In other words, you can't "buy" SEO through a domain. You can, however, lose on trust if the domain looks like a trap. A name crammed with keywords and hyphens often reads as a fly-by-night operation, not a serious business someone should pay.

Why the brand almost always wins long-term

A domain with your business name works for you for years:

  • It's easy to dictate on the phone and easy to remember ("go to yourbrand.com").
  • It grows with you — if you tile floors today and sell furniture tomorrow, `yourbrand.com` still fits, `tile-flooring.com` doesn't.
  • It builds a searchable brand: over time people search your name directly, and those searches are exactly what Google values.
  • It doesn't lock you into one city or one niche.

Hyphens and stacked keywords signal the opposite: something cheap, temporary, hard to recall. When you're choosing between sounding professional and gaming an algorithm that already changed, choose professional.

When a keyword domain does make sense

It's not black and white. There are real cases where a keyword domain helps:

  • A single, very specific niche project you don't plan to expand (a campaign page or a microsite).
  • As a secondary domain, bought in addition and redirected to your main brand site — you catch the type-it-in-the-bar traffic without sacrificing your brand.
  • When the business name is impossible to spell or already taken, and a short descriptive domain is simply clearer.

The practical rule: the brand is the house, keywords can be at most an extra door leading to the same house. Never the other way around.

Practical rules when you buy the domain

A few things that matter more than the brand-vs-keyword debate:

  • Use the right local extension for your country and audience (`.ro`, `.co.uk`, etc.). Grab the `.com` too if it's free.
  • Short and easy to say out loud. If you have to say "with a hyphen, two i's," it's too complicated.
  • Avoid multiple hyphens and numbers. They get lost over the phone and on cards.
  • Check it doesn't dangerously resemble a competitor — you don't want confusion or trouble.
  • Register the domain in YOUR name, not your agency's or the cousin "who knows computers." It's your property.

A domain is cheap. A rebrand two years from now is not.

How we do it at MPO and how we can help

When we build a site, we almost always start from a clean brand domain and wire it up properly to Google Business and the technical side, so you don't lose on speed or trust. We won't sell you the illusion that a "keyword" domain lifts you to #1 — because it doesn't, and you deserve a company that tells you that upfront.

We work remotely across the whole country and can prepare a free demo of your site before you pay anything — you see exactly how it looks on your domain, then you decide. Pricing is transparent, no surprises.

If you're stuck between two domain options, message us on WhatsApp with your business name and we'll tell you honestly which we'd choose and why.

Frequently asked questions

Does a domain with my city in it, like `barbershop-cluj.com`, help me rank higher locally?+

Not directly. Google won't lift you just because the city is in the domain. For local ranking, a complete Google Business profile, reviews, a real address, and pages with genuine content about your services in that city matter far more.

I already have a keyword domain with hyphens. Do I have to change it?+

Not necessarily right away. If you already have customers, reviews and printed materials on it, a sudden switch can cost more than it brings. A good move is to buy the brand domain, use it as your main one going forward, and redirect the old one to it properly.

Which extension should I pick: local, `.com`, or something else?+

For a local business, your country's extension is the natural, trust-inspiring choice. If budget allows, also buy the matching `.com` and redirect it so no one else grabs it. I'd avoid exotic extensions (`.biz`, `.info`) for a serious business.

Does it matter who owns the domain, the agency or me?+

It matters enormously. The domain must be registered in your name and details, with access to the management account. Otherwise, if you fall out with whoever built your site, you can lose your own address. With us, the domain is always the client's, never ours.
