Domain and web hosting, explained simply (no jargon)

Domain and web hosting, explained simply for business owners: what they are, how they differ, how much they cost per year, what a missed renewal means, and why good hosting really matters.

When you ask for a quote on a website, two words pop up right away that sound technical and give you pause: "domain" and "hosting." In reality, they're two simple things, and as a business owner you practically don't have to deal with either one. We'll explain them in plain terms, no jargon, so you know exactly what you're paying for, what you pay once a year, and what happens if you forget about a renewal.

What is a domain

The domain is your website's address — exactly what someone types into the browser to reach you: `firma-ta.ro`. It's your name on the internet and, very often, the first impression your business makes online.

A few practical things worth knowing about a domain, because this is where you make decisions that stay with you for years:

  • It's rented, not bought outright. You pay for it annually and it stays yours as long as you keep renewing it. If you let the renewal lapse, the domain enters a grace period and then becomes available again — someone else can take it.
  • Short names win. Ideally it's the company name itself: easy to dictate over the phone, to spell correctly, and to print on a vehicle or a flyer.
  • The extension says something. `.ro` inspires trust in a customer from Romania, while `.com` is a good fit if you also want to reach beyond the country. Many owners take both, so the competition doesn't end up on the missing version.
  • It can move with you. The domain isn't tied to any particular web design company; if you switch providers, you take it with you.

What is hosting

If the domain is the address, hosting is the land and the building where the website actually lives. All the pages, photos, and text have to sit somewhere on a special computer, called a server, that's running non-stop and delivers them to visitors at any time of day.

Without hosting, you have a nice name that leads nowhere. Without a domain, you have a website nobody knows how to reach. The two are "linked" technically to each other through a setting called DNS — essentially, you tell the address (`firma-ta.ro`) which server to send visitors to. It's a step we handle, and you don't touch a thing.

Domain vs hosting: the difference in short

The confusion is natural, since you pay for them at roughly the same time and they seem like "the same technical thing." Here's the clear distinction:

AspectDomainHosting
What it isThe address, the nameThe place where the website lives
AnalogyThe company's addressThe physical premises
PaymentAnnuallyMonthly or annually

In short: the domain makes you findable, hosting makes you functional. You need both, but you don't have to manage them yourself.

How much it costs, roughly

The good news is that costs here are small and predictable. As a ballpark, on the market:

  • `.ro` domain: around 10–15 € per year
  • Hosting for a small or medium presentation site: roughly between 30 and 120 € per year, depending on quality and resources
  • Security certificate (SSL), the padlock next to the address: usually included, free

These are modest amounts compared to what a good website can bring in. We include and coordinate them as part of maintenance, which starts from 29 €/month — meaning you don't get hit with separate invoices and renewal deadlines you might miss by oversight. The price of the website itself is a separate investment, paid just once: from 290–490 € for a landing page, 490–890 € for a presentation site, 890–1.500 € for a larger one, from 690 € for an online store. The annual technical costs for domain and hosting come on top, they're small, and we communicate them clearly to you from the start. We've also explained the details about the build price in how much a website costs.

Why good hosting (and speed) matters

This is the part many people underestimate. Cheap, overcrowded hosting means a website that loads slowly, "goes down" exactly when you have more visitors from a campaign, and sometimes doesn't even show up for a few minutes. Good hosting means the opposite: fast pages, near-constant availability, and backups the site can be restored from if something happens.

Why this is important for you, concretely:

  • Visitors stay. A site that appears in a few seconds doesn't lose impatient people before they see your offer.
  • Google takes speed into account. Loading speed is a real ranking factor in search, especially on mobile.
  • Your image wins. A fast site that's always online looks like a serious company, not a project thrown together in a hurry.

That's why we don't cut corners on hosting at your expense. We choose good solutions, optimize the images, and configure the site to be fast by design, not just "to work." If you also want the local visibility side, we've written separately about local SEO.

Who handles everything: we do

The most important part for you: you don't need to understand any of this to have a website that works. We buy the domain (or take over yours, if you already have one), choose the right hosting, connect them through DNS, install the security certificate, and make sure everything is fast and secure. You get a finished website and an address you can confidently hand to customers, put on business cards, and place on your vehicle.

And if one day you want to move on, the domain stays yours — we don't hold you captive. To us, that means transparency: we explain in plain language what you're paying for and why, with no surprises and no technical terms thrown around just to sound complicated.

If you'd like to see concretely how your business's website would look, we'll prepare a free mockup with your company name, no strings attached. Tell us in a few words what you do, and the rest — domain, hosting, speed — leave to us.

Frequently asked questions

What is a web domain?+

The domain is your website's address, what someone types into the browser to reach you (for example, firma-ta.ro). It's your name on the internet, the equivalent of a physical address for your business. It's paid for annually and stays yours as long as you keep renewing it; if you let the renewal lapse, the domain can be taken over by someone else.

What's the difference between a domain and hosting?+

The domain is the address (the name) of the website, while hosting is the place where the website actually lives — a server running non-stop that delivers the pages to visitors. The domain makes you findable, hosting makes you functional. You need both, and they connect through a setting called DNS, which we handle.

How much does a domain and hosting for a website cost?+

As a ballpark, a .ro domain costs around 10–15 € per year, and hosting for a small or medium presentation site roughly between 30 and 120 € per year, depending on quality. The security certificate (SSL) is usually included for free. At MPO Web Studio we include and coordinate these in maintenance from 29 €/month, separately from the price of building the website.

What happens if I forget to renew the domain?+

The domain first enters a grace period, during which the site and email may stop working, and then, if it's still not renewed, it becomes available again and can be taken by someone else. That's why, when we handle maintenance, we track the renewal deadlines for you, so you don't lose the address your customers already know.

Why does good hosting and site speed matter?+

Good hosting means fast pages, near-constant availability, backups, and protection. It matters because visitors stay on a fast site, Google takes speed into account when ranking in search, and a site that's always online looks like a serious company. Cheap, overcrowded hosting leads to a site that loads slowly and sometimes goes down exactly when you have traffic.

Do I have to deal with the domain and hosting myself?+

No. At MPO Web Studio we buy the domain (or take over yours if you already have one), choose the right hosting, connect them, install the security certificate, and make sure everything is fast and secure. You get a finished website, and the domain stays yours if you ever want to move on.
