Why Doesn't My Business Show Up on Google Maps? A Troubleshooting Checklist
Can't find your business on the map? A practical, step-by-step checklist that separates real problems from simple confusion.
It's a frustrating feeling: you search for your own business on Google Maps and it simply isn't there. Or it shows up for you, but customers say they can't find it. The good news is that, in most cases, the cause is one of a handful of concrete, fixable issues - and you don't need a specialist to spot them.
This guide is a checklist ordered from the most common causes to the rarest. You work through it top to bottom, running a simple check at each step. We won't promise you the top spot on the map (no honest person can guarantee that), but we'll help you understand why you're not showing up at all - and what to do to fix it.
First, be clear: are you missing, or just ranking low?
This is the most common mix-up. There are two completely different situations:
- You search the exact business name plus the city ("MPO Beauty Cluj-Napoca") and nothing appears. That's a genuine technical problem - the profile is missing, unverified, or blocked.
- You search a general category ("barber near me", "salon Cluj") and don't see yourself. That's not about existence, it's about position in the results - it depends on distance, competition, and how complete your profile is.
Run the test in an incognito window, signed out of your account. If you still don't appear when searching the exact name, continue with the steps below. If you appear by name but not by category, the problem is visibility, not existence - and it's fixed differently.
Do you have a business profile - and is it verified?
It sounds obvious, but this is the single most common real cause. To show up on Maps you need a Google Business Profile that has been created and, above all, verified.
- Go to business.google.com with the account that manages the business. If you find no profile, it was probably never created.
- If the profile exists but says verification is pending, you won't appear publicly until you complete it (by postcard, phone, email, or video, depending on what Google asks).
- If someone created the profile long ago (a former employee, an agency), it may be on another account. Look for the option to claim the profile.
An unverified profile is essentially invisible. Verification is the first box to tick.
Is the profile suspended or marked "permanently closed"?
If you had a profile that used to show up and suddenly vanished, two causes are likely.
Suspension. Google suspends profiles for rule violations: keywords stuffed into the business name ("Salon Cluj - Cheap Barber Manicure"), an address that isn't a real premises, wrong categories, or too many edits made too fast. The name must be your real business name, and the address one where you actually operate.
"Permanently closed" or "moved". Anyone can suggest to Google that a business has closed, and sometimes a competitor does this maliciously. Check your dashboard for such a status and request reinstatement. If the profile is suspended, the dashboard has an appeal option - fill it in with evidence that the business is real and active.
Address, category, and service area
Wrong details can hide you even when the profile is verified.
- Address. If you work from a location where you receive customers, the address must be complete and correct. A pin dropped in the wrong spot throws you into another neighborhood or town.
- Business that travels to the customer (no visitable premises - plumber, photographer, cleaning). Here you set a "service area" and hide the address. If you hide the address but don't define the area, Google doesn't know where to show you.
- Category. The wrong primary category takes you out of relevant searches. Pick exactly what you are ("beauty salon", not "store").
Also check that your name, address, and phone are identical everywhere - website, Facebook, directories. Mismatches weaken Google's trust in your data.
Duplicates, personalization, and brand-new profiles
The last suspects, if nothing above solved it.
- Duplicates. If two profiles exist for the same business, Google may show an empty or old one and hide the good one. Find the duplicates and request a merge.
- Personalization. You may see the business because you're logged in or visit it often. The correct test is always incognito, signed out, ideally from a different phone or network.
- Too-new profile. A freshly verified profile can need a few days before it appears reliably in results. That's normal; don't panic on day one.
If you've ticked everything and the business still won't appear by exact name, it's most likely an unresolved suspension or an unfinished verification - that's where it pays to push.
When it's worth asking for help
Most of these checks you can do yourself, with patience. It gets complicated when the profile keeps getting suspended, when you have old duplicates that won't merge, or when someone maliciously edits your data.
At MPO Web Studio we work remotely, across the country, and we can take on exactly this kind of cleanup: verification, fixing the address and category, appealing a suspension, merging duplicates - plus tying the profile to a fast website that strengthens your presence on Google. No promises of a "guaranteed number one", because that doesn't exist; just a correct, by-the-book setup.
If you'd like an extra pair of eyes, message us on WhatsApp with your business name and city, and we'll tell you in plain words what needs fixing.
Frequently asked questions
How long until my business shows up on Google Maps after I create it?+
After verification, usually a few days to settle into results. Sometimes faster. If several days have passed and you still don't appear when searching the exact name, check the verification status and whether the profile isn't suspended.
I have a business but it doesn't show for "near me". Is that a problem?+
Not necessarily. "Near me" searches are about position, not existence - distance from the searcher, competition, and how complete your profile is all matter. If you appear when searching the exact name, the business exists on the map; it's just a matter of visibility in the results list.
My profile was suspended. Can I still get it back?+
Most of the time, yes. The dashboard has an appeal option. First fix the cause (remove keywords from the name, correct the address, choose the right category), then submit the appeal with evidence that the business is real and active. It can take a while to get a response.
Do I need a physical location to appear on Maps?+
Not necessarily. If you travel to the customer (plumber, photographer, cleaning services), you can set a "service area" and hide the exact address. The key is to define the area correctly, otherwise Google doesn't know where to show you.
Can someone damage my Google profile?+
Yes, unfortunately. Anyone can suggest edits or even that the business is "permanently closed". Check your profile regularly, turn on dashboard notifications, and quickly correct any wrong edit. A monitored profile is much harder to sabotage.
