The "Order online" button in Google: how to show direct ordering in Search and on Maps
How to turn on online ordering straight from your restaurant's Google profile and skip the aggregator commission.
You search for your restaurant on Google and, right under the name, a green button appears: "Order online". Sounds perfect — the customer is already there, ready to order. The catch is who gets paid. Most of the time that button doesn't lead to you; it leads to an aggregator that takes a heavy slice of every order and keeps the customer for good.
Here's the good news: the button in Google doesn't belong to the aggregators. You can add your own ordering link, put it first, and receive orders directly, with no middleman and no commission. In this article I'll show you exactly where the button appears, why it fills up with aggregator links, and how to turn it in your favor, step by step.
What the button actually is and where it shows up
"Order online" is a link attached to your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business). It shows up in two key places:
- in Google Search, in the panel on the right that appears when someone searches your restaurant's name or "pizza + your town";
- on Google Maps, when someone opens your listing.
Google doesn't process the order itself and takes no money from it. It simply displays one or more ordering links and sends the customer there. That means the real question isn't "how do I turn the button on", it's "what link sits behind it". If that link is only the aggregator, you're paying commission on an order that could have come to you directly for free.
Why aggregator links show up there
You may never have pressed a button to put an aggregator there — and yet it's there. The reason: Google receives ordering links automatically, from its food-ordering partners. The moment your restaurant is listed on an aggregator, that aggregator can feed its link to Google, and the button populates on its own.
The result is that many owners discover that "order online" on their own Google profile leads exclusively to middlemen. It's not your mistake, and it doesn't mean you're stuck with it. Within the set of links you can add your own and set which one takes priority. Google leaves you in control; it's just that nobody tells you, because aggregators are quite happy being first.
How to turn on direct ordering from your profile (step by step)
You need a verified Google Business Profile and your own ordering link (your menu/ordering page). Then:
- Open your profile in Google (search your business name while signed in to the business account, or use the Google Business Profile app).
- Find the editing section — "Edit profile" → the menu / ordering area ("Food ordering" / "Ordering links").
- Add your own ordering link.
- Where Google allows it, set it as the preferred / primary link so it appears first, ahead of the aggregators.
If you can't find the option, check from Search: open your listing while signed in, and you should see the management controls right in the panel. Changes can take a few hours to appear publicly.
How to skip the commission entirely: your own ordering system
To skip the commission it's not enough to change the link — you need somewhere to point it. That is, a page of your own where the customer can actually order. Real options, from simple to complete:
- Menu + WhatsApp ordering: the customer picks, and the order lands straight in your WhatsApp. Zero commission, quick to set up, works great for small venues.
- Your own cart on your site: an ordering page with products, quantities, delivery/pickup and payment. A bit more to build, but everything stays yours — the customer, the data, the money.
The core idea: an aggregator is fine as a discovery window, but the customer who is already searching for you by name has no reason to go through a middleman that cuts into your margin.
What keeps the button useful and where we can help
A few simple rules so the button works for you:
- Your link must open well on a phone — nearly everyone orders from mobile.
- The menu behind the link must be up to date: correct prices, available products, clear hours.
- Be skeptical of anyone promising "guaranteed number one on Google". Nobody can guarantee that; what you can control is having a complete profile and direct ordering switched on.
At MPO Web Studio we build exactly this: an ordering page of your own, wired into the Google button, with a menu and WhatsApp ordering or your own cart — no commission to anyone. We work remotely and build you a free demo first, so you see the result before you pay anything. If you want to win your orders back from the aggregators, message us on WhatsApp and we'll start from your current profile.
Frequently asked questions
Does Google charge anything for the ordering button?+
No. Google Business Profile is free, and adding an ordering link costs nothing. The only costs come if you use an aggregator (their commission) or if you build your own ordering system on your site.
Can I completely remove aggregator links from my profile?+
Not always — you can't always delete an aggregator's link, because it keeps feeding it to Google as long as you're listed there. What you can reliably do is add your own link and, where Google allows, set it as preferred so it appears first.
Does it work if I have no website, only WhatsApp?+
Yes. You can point the button to a simple menu page that opens the order in WhatsApp. It's the fastest commission-free option and works very well for small venues without a complex platform.
How long until the change shows in Search and on Maps?+
Usually within a few hours, sometimes faster. If you don't see the change right away, check on another device or signed out — you sometimes see a cached version.
The aggregator brings me customers, why drop it?+
You don't have to drop it entirely. An aggregator is useful for new customers who discover you. But a customer already searching for you by name on Google deserves to order directly, commission-free — that's where you keep margin and the customer relationship.
