Google Local Services and the map: how to rank at the top for a trade

A practical guide for plumbers, electricians, painters and other trades: how to reach the top of Google Maps in your service area, step by step.

You're a plumber, an electrician, a painter, or you build custom furniture. Your best channel for new clients isn't paid advertising — it's the moment someone in your town searches "plumber near me" and you show up first on the map, with reviews and a phone number. That's where the jobs are won.

The trouble is nobody explains it plainly. You hear "local SEO", Google Business, Local Services Ads, and you're left thinking it's complicated or that you'll have to pay someone monthly forever. The reality is simpler, and most of it you can do yourself. In this article I'll show you exactly what matters for a trade, in what order, and where you'll actually need help.

The map (Google Maps) and Local Services Ads are not the same thing

There are three different places you can appear when someone searches for a tradesperson, and it matters not to mix them up:

  • The organic map results (the "local pack" — the three businesses with pins under a small map). You get here for free, through your Google Business profile.
  • Local Services Ads — the ads with the "Google Guaranteed" badge, where you pay per lead instead of per click. Their availability varies by country and trade, so don't build your plan around them as a starting point.
  • Classic web results (your website), which matter most for longer, more specific searches.

For most trades, the main engine is your Google Business profile plus reviews. That's where we start.

The foundation: a complete, accurate Google Business profile

Your Google Business profile (formerly Google My Business) is free and it's the single most important thing you control. What to get right:

  • The exact business name, with no keywords stuffed in artificially (not "Cheap 24/7 Plumber Downtown" — you risk suspension).
  • The correct primary category (e.g. "Plumber") plus relevant secondary categories.
  • Service area — if you go to the client and have no showroom, set the towns/areas you cover rather than a fixed address.
  • Phone, hours, services filled in completely.
  • Real photos of your own work, added regularly, not stock images.

A half-filled profile loses to a complete one, even when both are equally close to the client. These details cost nothing and they decide the outcome.

Reviews: the strongest factor you can actually influence

After relevance and distance, reviews are what pushes a tradesperson up the map and — more importantly — what convinces the person to call you rather than the next name.

How to get them the right way:

  • Ask for a review at the end of each job, while the client is happy. Not a month later.
  • Make it effortless: send the direct review link over WhatsApp.
  • Reply to all of them, including the less flattering ones, calmly and professionally.

What NOT to do: buy fake reviews or post them all in one day. Google detects that and can penalise you. A steady flow of real reviews, gathered over time, beats any shortcut. And be sceptical of anyone promising a "guaranteed number one" — nobody can guarantee that, not even Google.

Your website and data consistency (NAP) support the map

Your Google Business profile doesn't live in isolation. Google also looks at your website and at how consistent your business details are across the web.

  • NAP means Name, Address, Phone — written identically everywhere: your site, Google, business directories, Facebook. Three different versions weaken the signal.
  • A simple, fast site that loads well on a phone, with pages for your services and service area, helps a lot. It doesn't need to be fancy — it needs to be clear and load quickly.
  • Separate pages per service or town (e.g. "heating installation in Cluj-Napoca") catch the more specific searches.

That's how the profile and the site work together, not against each other.

How long it takes, what it costs, and where you can get help

Be realistic with your expectations: the map moves over weeks and months, not overnight. A well-built profile plus steadily gathered reviews starts to pay off gradually. Anyone promising the top spot in a few days is lying to you.

The good news: you can lay the foundation yourself, for free — the profile, the photos, asking for reviews. It's work, but it's within reach.

If you'd rather not wrestle with the website and setup, we at MPO Web Studio work remotely across the whole country and first build you a free demo version of your site so you can see it before committing to anything. Frequently asked questions

Do I really need a physical address (an office) to appear on the map?+

No. If you travel to the client and don't receive customers at a premises, you set your profile as a "service-area business" and hide the address, showing only the towns you cover. Google fully allows this for trades.

Do Local Services Ads (Google Guaranteed) work in my country?+

Availability is limited and doesn't cover every trade or area. That's why I'd start from the free Google Business profile and reviews, which work everywhere, and only look at paid ads afterwards if they're available for your field.

How quickly will I reach the top map results?+

It depends on competition and how close you are to the searcher, but generally it's weeks to a few months of steady work. There's no instant switch. Be sceptical of anyone promising number one in a few days.

Can I put keywords in my business name to rank higher?+

It's not advisable. Google requires your real business name; adding artificial keywords can get your profile suspended. Keywords belong naturally in your description, services and website — not in the name.

Do I need a website, or is the Google profile enough?+

You can start with just the profile, but a simple, fast website strengthens the signal, catches more specific searches, and gives people a place to learn the details and contact you. The two reinforce each other.
