A Filming Starter Kit Under 500 Lei: The Mic, Tripod and Light Actually Worth Buying

What to buy (and what to skip) so you can film business videos that build trust, using your phone and a small budget.

You've decided to film videos for your business — a presentation, a testimonial, a walkthrough of your location, a few Reels. Great. The trouble starts when you look at gear and get lost among cameras that cost thousands and accessories you don't understand. Good news: you need none of that to start.

The difference between an amateur video and one that inspires trust isn't the camera — today's phones film beautifully. It's three things: clear sound, a stable image, and good light. All three fit under 500 lei. Below is exactly what's worth buying, in what order, and where people throw money away.

Start with the microphone, not the image

The most common mistake: spend everything on the picture and film with the phone's built-in mic. The result has echo, background noise, and that "recorded in a bathroom" sound. People forgive a mediocre image, but they close a video instantly over bad audio.

For someone talking on camera (a presentation, a testimonial), the answer is a lavalier — the small clip-on mic. A wired one, like the Boya BY-M1, costs under 100 lei and plugs into your phone (with an adapter) or laptop. Clip it a hand's width below the chin and the clarity changes completely.

If you move around, wireless kits (2.4GHz) run around 150–250 lei. The golden rule: the mic has to be close to the mouth. Distance is the enemy of good sound.

The tripod — the stability that makes the difference

A shaky or crooked frame screams "amateur." A tripod fixes that and, as a bonus, frees your hands.

For a phone, you want a telescopic aluminum tripod with a phone holder, somewhere around 100–150 lei. What to look for:

  • it extends up to your eye level;
  • a head that rotates so you can shoot both horizontally and vertically (for Reels or TikTok).

For shots on a desk or counter, a mini tripod of about 50 lei is enough.

One detail that matters a lot: put the camera at the subject's eye level, not below it. Filming from below distorts the face and flatters no one.

Light — the window is free, the rest is optional

Your first light source costs nothing: a window. Face it, never turn your back to it. Natural daylight is soft and flattering — many good videos are simply a person facing a window.

When the window isn't enough (evenings, dark rooms), add an LED panel or a softbox. A single softbox at 150–200 lei changes everything. Light diffused through a softbox looks far more natural than a bare LED, which throws hard shadows.

The ideal position: the light set at roughly 45 degrees to the side and slightly above, not straight on. A ring light is fine for tight face shots (beauty), but for business a softbox looks more natural.

A concrete budget under 500 lei

Here's a complete kit you can start with today, using your phone as the camera:

  • Wired lavalier mic: ~90 lei
  • Telescopic tripod with phone holder: ~130 lei
  • LED panel or softbox with a stand: ~180 lei

Total: around 400 lei. That leaves room for a phone-to-mic adapter (~20 lei) if your model needs one. You're under 500 and have everything you need for stable shots, clear sound, and good light.

Don't buy it all at once. Get the mic and tripod first, test with window light, and add the LED panel only once you see you actually need it.

What NOT to buy at the start

This is where people lose the most money:

  • A dedicated camera — your phone is more than enough at first, and a camera drags along memory cards, lenses, and heavier editing.
  • A gimbal — it looks good on paper, but a tripod gives you more for less. Buy a gimbal only if you film a lot on the move.
  • A "studio" XLR mic with an audio interface — complexity you don't need for phone video.
  • Huge ring lights — often overkill for a company video.

Start minimal. Upgrade only when a real limit stops you, not just to "have it."

The video is good — but where does it land?

A good video builds trust — but it has to live somewhere: your website, your Google profile, social media. The video grabs attention; the site turns attention into a client. A great clip on a slow page with no clear contact button just gets lost.

At MPO Web Studio we build websites remotely, for businesses across the country, with a ready-made demo you see before paying anything — transparent pricing, no surprises. If you want your videos to actually bring clients, set on a fast page with a clear call to action, message us on WhatsApp. We'll show you exactly what it could look like, no strings attached.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really not need a professional camera?+

No, especially at the start. A phone from the last few years films very well in normal light. Money spent on sound, stability, and light gives you a far more visible improvement than an expensive camera used poorly.

Wired or wireless microphone?+

Wired if you stay put and talk on camera — it's cheaper and you avoid battery and interference issues. Wireless if you move around or film a location tour. Both sound far better than the phone's built-in mic.

I'm filming in a noisy space. What do I do?+

Move the lavalier close to the mouth, film in a smaller room with soft surfaces (rugs, curtains) that absorb echo, and avoid large empty spaces. If the noise is constant (street, machines), switch it off if you can or pick another time.

How many lights do I need?+

Most of the time, a single diffused source plus window light is enough. If you want a shadow-free frame, add a second, weaker source on the opposite side. Don't overcomplicate it at the start.

What do I edit the videos with?+

Free phone apps like CapCut are more than enough for simple cuts, captions, and basic corrections. You don't need complicated software to produce a clean, business-ready video.
