How to Keep Your Reviews and Google Profile When You Move to a New Address

Relocating? Here's how to keep your reviews, photos and profile history on Google — and the mistake that wipes them all out.

You found a better space, a cheaper rent, or you simply outgrew the old place and you're moving. The good news: you don't have to start over. The reviews you gathered over years, your photos, customer questions and the age of your Google profile can all stay intact after the move — if you do things in the right order.

The bad news: the most common mistake does the exact opposite. Many owners think they need a brand-new profile for the new address. The result? All the reviews stay stuck on the old profile, and the new one starts empty. In this article I'll show you how to move the address while keeping the whole history, what to expect afterwards, and what to update outside of Google.

The golden rule: edit the profile, don't create a new one

Reviews aren't tied to the address — they're tied to the profile. As long as you edit the same Google Business Profile and just change its address, your reviews, ratings, photos and replies stay exactly where they were.

That's why the rule is simple: never create a new profile for the new location. A new profile means zero reviews, zero history, and often a duplicate that confuses both Google and your customers.

  • Edit the address = you keep everything.
  • Create a new profile = you lose everything.

The only real exception is opening an additional location (you're not moving — you have two premises at once). Then you do need a separate profile for each physical address. But if you close the old place and move, you stay on the same profile.

Step by step: change the address without losing reviews

You can edit the address straight from Google Search or Google Maps, signed in with the account that owns the profile:

  • Search your business name on Google and open the management panel (or open the profile from your Google account).
  • Go to Edit profile → Location / Address.
  • Enter the new address exactly as it appears officially (street, number, city, postal code).
  • Save. The change enters a review process.

Moving may trigger re-verification (by video, call, email or, less often, a code mailed to the new address). That's normal — Google wants to confirm you're really at the new spot. Don't delete anything and don't create another profile while it's "pending." Your reviews stay visible throughout.

What happens to your search ranking after moving

Here I have to be honest: you keep your reviews, but your position on the map can shift. Google's local ranking factors in, among other things, how close you are to the person searching. If you move to another neighborhood or city, you show up differently for searches there — not because you lost anything, but because the geographic reference is new.

Reviews and profile age still count and help you recover faster. Give it a few weeks to settle.

And an honest warning: if someone promises you'll stay "guaranteed number one" after moving, don't believe them. No one controls Google's algorithm, and proximity can't be gamed.

Update the address everywhere, not just on Google

Google also looks at what the rest of the internet says about you. If the old address appears on your website, on Facebook, in directories or in your email signature, those mismatches weaken your profile and can confuse customers.

Update the address everywhere, worded identically:

  • on your website (contact page, footer, structured data / schema)
  • on Facebook, Instagram and other networks
  • in the directories and listings where you're registered
  • on Google Maps (it syncs automatically when you edit the profile)

Consistency of name, address and phone (what's called NAP) is one of the things Google values most. It's worth an hour of cleanup.

Special cases and where we can help

  • Business with no visitable premises (you deliver to clients, you're mobile): you don't show an address, you set "service areas." When you move, you change the area, not necessarily a pin on the map.
  • Already have a duplicate? Don't delete it at random — ask Google for a merge, so reviews from both land on the correct profile.
  • Profile managed by someone else (a former agency, an ex-employee): recover access first, otherwise you can't edit the address.

If all this sounds like a hassle, it's exactly the kind of thing we handle at MPO Web Studio. We work remotely, nationwide, we update your site and its structured data so they're consistent with your profile, and we can build you a free demo of the new site before you pay anything. If you're moving and don't want to lose a thing, message us on WhatsApp and we'll sort it out cleanly.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose my reviews if I change the address?+

No, as long as you edit the same profile and just change its address. Reviews, photos and history stay on the profile. You only lose them if you create a new profile for the new location — so never do that.

How long until the new address is approved?+

Usually a few days, sometimes faster. If Google asks for re-verification (video, call or mailed code), it can take longer. Your reviews stay visible the whole time.

Do I have to re-verify my business after moving?+

Possibly. Changing the address often triggers re-verification, because Google wants to confirm you're really at the new spot. Follow the steps requested and don't create another profile in the meantime.

I already made a new profile and now I have reviews on both. What do I do?+

Don't delete either one yourself. Ask Google to merge the two profiles, so the reviews combine onto one, with the correct address. That way you lose nothing.

Will my Google ranking drop after I move?+

It can shift, because local ranking depends partly on proximity to the searcher. You haven't lost reviews — only the geographic reference is new. With reviews and age intact, you bounce back faster.
