How to Add and Optimize Your Business Hours and Holiday Schedule on Google

A practical step-by-step guide to setting your regular hours and special holiday hours on Google, so you never lose a customer to a wrong schedule.

Nothing costs you more than a customer who shows up to a locked door because Google said you were open. Or the reverse: someone looks you up on a holiday, sees "open until 6 PM" without knowing you have special hours, and leaves annoyed. The hours on your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) are one of the first things a person sees when they search for you on their phone.

The good news is that it takes only a few minutes and you don't need a website for it. In the guide below I'll show you exactly where to set your regular hours, how to add special holiday hours, what the "popular times" chart really means, and how to avoid the mistakes that make you look unreliable to both customers and Google.

Where to set your regular hours (step by step)

You have two simple, free paths:

  • Straight from Search: go to Google while signed in with the account that owns the business, search your business name, and you'll see a management panel above the results. Tap "Edit profile" → "Hours".
  • From Google Maps: open the app, tap your profile photo → "Your Business Profile" → "Edit".

There you set an opening and closing time for each day. If you have a lunch break or work in two shifts (e.g. 9 AM–1 PM and 3 PM–7 PM), you can add multiple time slots to the same day with the add-slot button. For days off, mark the day as "Closed". Save and check — sometimes changes appear after a few hours, not instantly.

Special holiday hours: the part most people forget

Regular hours repeat week after week. Holidays need "Special hours" — a separate section in your profile.

In the same hours-editing area you'll find "Add special hours" (sometimes "Holiday hours"). Google automatically suggests upcoming dates: Christmas, New Year's, national holidays, and so on. For each one you can:

  • Mark the day as "Closed".
  • Set reduced hours (e.g. open only 10 AM–2 PM).

My advice: set them a few weeks ahead, not on the day itself. When a customer sees "Special hours: closed for Christmas" written in advance, they trust you. When they see the normal schedule and hit a locked door, you've lost them. Put a recurring reminder before each major holiday of the year.

"Popular times" and why the difference matters

Google sometimes shows a chart of "peak" or "popular times" under your profile. That is NOT set by you — it's calculated automatically from visitors' location data and cannot be edited manually. Don't confuse it with your business hours.

What you control are your actual opening times. Keep the distinction clear:

  • Business hours = what you set, when you're open. Editable anytime.
  • Popular times = Google's estimate of when people come in. Informational only.

If the popular-times chart looks empty or wrong, don't panic — it corrects itself over time as Google gathers data. Focus on what you control: an accurate schedule and up-to-date special hours.

Common mistakes that cost you customers

From working with local businesses, these are the traps that show up most often:

  • Hours left on the old value after you switched to a seasonal schedule (summer vs. winter).
  • "Temporarily closed" left active after you reopened — Google suppresses your visibility while it's checked.
  • Wrong time zone if you created the profile from another country — verify it's your local time.
  • An unmarked lunch break, so the customer shows up at noon exactly when you're out.
  • Special hours set last year and never updated — Google shows them as outdated.

Check your profile once a month. It takes two minutes and saves you negative reviews like "said open, was closed". Long-term consistency matters more than any trick.

When it's worth linking hours to your site, and how we can help

The Google profile is enough for hours, but if you also have a website, the hours shown there should match Google's exactly. Contradictory info (site says one thing, Google another) confuses customers and lowers trust. On a well-built site, hours and holidays can sit in a clear, easy-to-update spot.

At MPO Web Studio, we build websites for local businesses and deliver fully remotely, nationwide. We first make you a free, pre-built demo you can see before paying anything — including a properly designed hours-and-contact section. Frequently asked questions

How long until my changed hours appear on Google?+

Changes are usually visible within a few minutes to a few hours. Don't worry if they don't appear instantly — it doesn't mean you did something wrong. If they still don't show after a day, check that you pressed "Save" and that you're signed in with the account that owns the profile.

Do I need a website to set my hours?+

No. Hours are set directly in your Google Business Profile, for free, from Search or the Maps app. A website helps keep the info consistent across places, but it isn't required to have correct hours on Google.

Can I set holiday hours for the whole year at once?+

You can add special hours for several dates at once, but Google mainly suggests upcoming holidays. It's practical to set the big ones in advance (Christmas, New Year's, national holidays) and put a reminder to refresh them yearly.

Why does it say "temporarily closed" when I'm open?+

Most likely you once ticked the "Temporarily closed" option and it stayed active. Go into profile editing, turn it off, and reset your normal hours. Note: while it's checked, Google greatly reduces your visibility in searches.

Can I edit the popular-times chart?+

No. "Popular times" are calculated automatically by Google from visitor data and can't be edited manually. You only control your business hours. If the chart looks empty or wrong, it corrects itself over time as Google gathers data.
