Why Facebook Shows the Wrong Image or Text When You Share Your Link (And How to Fix It)
When you share your site on Facebook and the wrong photo or description shows up, the culprits are your Open Graph tags and a stale cache. Here's the fix.
You posted your business link on Facebook and, instead of your nice logo or product photo, up came a random image, some old text, or even another company's name. It's frustrating, especially when you want to look professional. The good news: it's almost always a simple problem, not something permanently broken on your site.
Facebook (and WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Instagram) doesn't "read" your page the way a visitor does. It looks at hidden tags in your code, called Open Graph, to decide which photo, title, and description to show. If those tags are missing, wrong, or Facebook has an old version saved in memory, you get exactly the mess you're seeing. In this article I'll explain, in plain terms, why it happens and how to fix it, step by step.
What Open Graph tags are and why they matter
When you share a link, social networks don't guess what to show on their own. They look in the page's code for special instructions called Open Graph meta tags (OG for short). The important ones are:
- og:title — the bold title under the image
- og:description — the short line beneath the title
- og:image — the large photo that appears
- og:url — the page's official address
If these tags are missing, Facebook improvises: it grabs the first text or first image it finds on the page. That's how you end up seeing a cookie banner, a tiny logo, or a description ripped out of context. When the tags are set correctly, you control exactly what people see, no matter which network you share on.
Why the wrong image shows even though you changed it
The most common reason isn't that your site is wrong now — it's that Facebook remembers an old version. The first time someone shared your link, Facebook "photographed" the page and saved the result in its memory (cache). Even if you've since changed the photo or text, it still shows what it saved back then.
Other frequent causes:
- og:image is missing or points to a deleted photo
- the photo is too small, so Facebook ignores it (ideally 1200×630 pixels)
- you have multiple og:image tags and it picks the wrong one
- the link uses www/no-www or http/https differently, treated as a new page
So the problem is often the combination: an unclear tag plus old memory.
How to force Facebook to reload your link (the free tool)
Facebook has an official, free tool that fixes most cases: the Facebook Sharing Debugger (search Google for "Facebook Sharing Debugger" or go to developers.facebook.com/tools/debug).
The steps are simple:
- Paste the exact address of the page you're sharing
- Click "Debug"
- See which photo and text Facebook "sees" right now
- Click "Scrape Again" to wipe the old version and pull the fresh info
After you click "Scrape Again," share the link again — the correct photo should appear. WhatsApp and LinkedIn have similar tools, but reloading from Facebook often fixes those too. If the tool shows errors (image not found, missing tag), that's the real cause and that's where you work.
How to set the image and text correctly
So you don't have to fight it every time, set the tags once, properly:
- Choose a dedicated sharing image, horizontal, around 1200×630 pixels, with your logo and a clear message
- Write a short, honest title (business name plus what you offer)
- Write a one-to-two sentence description, no filler words
- Make sure the address in og:url is the one you actually share
On WordPress, most people handle this with an SEO plugin (Yoast, Rank Math) that has a "Social" section where you upload the image and text. On custom-built sites, the tags go directly in the code, on each page. The core idea is the same everywhere: you decide what people see, instead of letting the network guess.
When it's worth asking for help (and how we work)
If you've tried reloading in the Sharing Debugger and it's still wrong, the problem is usually deeper, in how the site is built: dynamically generated tags coming out wrong, an image that loads too slowly, or a platform that won't let you control the social side.
At MPO Web Studio we build sites where this is already set up correctly from the start — every page has its own sharing image and text, so links look clean on Facebook, WhatsApp, and LinkedIn. We work fully remotely, with transparent pricing, and we can prepare a free demo of your site before you pay anything.
If you just want us to quickly fix the Open Graph on your current site, or to see what a new one would look like, message us on WhatsApp and we'll take a look together.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Facebook show the old image even though I changed it on my site?+
Because Facebook saved a "snapshot" of your page the first time it was shared and reuses it. Go to the Facebook Sharing Debugger, paste the link, and click "Scrape Again" to reload the fresh version. Then share the link again.
What size should the sharing image be?+
Ideally around 1200×630 pixels, horizontal. If the image is too small, Facebook may ignore it or show it tiny in a corner. A dedicated image with your logo and a clear message looks best across all networks.
I set everything correctly but it still shows wrong. What now?+
Check in the Sharing Debugger what Facebook sees right now — it often shows you the error (image not found, missing tag). Also verify you're sharing the exact same address (with or without www, http vs https), since those are treated as different pages.
Does this work the same for WhatsApp and LinkedIn?+
Yes, they all use the same Open Graph tags. If you set them well once, the link looks right everywhere. WhatsApp and LinkedIn have their own reload tools, but reloading from Facebook usually fixes most cases.
Do I need to know how to code to fix this?+
On WordPress, no — an SEO plugin like Yoast or Rank Math has a "Social" section where you upload the image and text without code. On custom-built sites, the tags go in the code, but it's a quick job for whoever manages the site.
