Prices on your site or "DM for pricing"? What actually books more salon appointments
Why hiding your prices loses clients, and how to display rates so they filter people in instead of scaring them off.
It's one of the oldest debates among salon owners: do you put a price list on your website, or write "DM for pricing" so competitors can't see your rates? It sounds like a marketing choice, but it's really a decision about how many appointments you book.
The short answer: in nearly every case, showing your prices books more appointments, not fewer. Not because people are hunting for the cheapest salon, but because a visible rate removes fear, filters out the wrong clients, and shortens the path from "just browsing on my phone" to "booked". In this article I'll explain what actually happens in a client's head when they can't find the price, when "DM for pricing" genuinely makes sense, and how to display rates so they work for you.
What actually happens when you write "DM for pricing"
When someone finds your salon and can't see a price, they don't think "how discreet, how classy". They think, almost every time, that it's expensive. And if they suspect it's expensive and also have to send a message just to find out, most people simply close the page and move on to the next salon that shows the number outright.
There's a hidden cost too: every "how much is a balayage?" you get in your inbox is a conversation you or your receptionist have to carry, instead of it turning into a booking automatically. "DM for pricing" doesn't hide your rates from competitors — they find them easily anyway. It hides them from the client who was ready to book.
Why visible prices actually book more appointments
A displayed price does three things at once, and all three work in your favor:
- It builds trust. A salon that shows its rates looks confident and fair. Hiding them signals the opposite: that a negotiation or an unpleasant surprise is coming.
- It filters clients. Anyone who sees the price and still books arrives ready to pay. You skip the awkward conversations at the chair and the last-minute cancellations when someone learns the cost.
- It shortens the decision. A client who sees price, duration, and what the service includes can book in the same minute. No message, no waiting for a reply, no interest going cold.
People aren't necessarily looking for the cheapest salon. They're looking for one they can trust. Transparency is the cheapest way to earn it.
When "DM for pricing" genuinely has a point
Let's be fair: there are services where a fixed price actually misleads. A balayage on long, thick hair doesn't cost the same as one on short hair, and lash extensions depend on technique and the state of the natural lashes.
But the answer isn't to hide the number — it's to frame it correctly. Instead of "DM for pricing", write:
- "from 250 lei" — a clear starting point that still leaves room to vary.
- a range: "350–600 lei, depending on length and density".
- one sentence explaining why it varies: "we set the final price at the consultation, once we see your hair".
That keeps you honest and flexible while still giving the client a number to hold onto. A "from" beats a "DM" every single time.
How to display prices so they sell, not just inform
A bare price list beats nothing, but you can make it work for you:
- Group by category: cuts, color, treatments, styling. The client instantly finds what she wants.
- Add duration next to each service. "Balayage — from 350 lei, ~3 hours" tells her to plan her time, not just her budget.
- Say what's included. "Includes wash, treatment, and styling" justifies the price and removes surprises from the conversation.
- Offer packages. Two or three combinations at a slightly better price raise the average booking value.
- Put a booking button next to the lists, not at the bottom of the page. The moment someone sees the price and accepts it is exactly the moment they need to be able to book.
The goal isn't just to inform — it's to turn the number into an action.
How we approach this at MPO Web Studio
When we build a salon site, we treat the price list as a conversion tool, not an administrative footnote. We lay it out clearly, with duration and what each service includes, and place the booking button right next to it — so the path from "how much" to "booked" is a single tap.
We work fully remote, from in Cluj-Napoca for salons across the country, and we build you a free demo first — you see your salon online before you pay anything. And because we preach transparency, we practice it: our own prices are displayed, not "in the DMs".
If you're stuck deciding what to put on your site, message us on WhatsApp. We'll look at your services together and tell you honestly what would work for your salon.
Frequently asked questions
If I post my prices, won't competitors steal them?+
Competitors find your prices anyway — they can call, send someone in, or ask a client. A hidden rate doesn't stop a motivated competitor; it only stops the client who was ready to book. The gain in appointments almost always outweighs the theoretical risk.
My services vary a lot in price. What do I do?+
Use "from X lei" or a range plus a short explanation of why it varies (length, density, technique). You give the client a realistic reference and keep your flexibility, without leaving her in the dark with a "DM for pricing".
Is it better to put prices on the site or just on Instagram?+
Ideally both, but the website is the priority. On Instagram the info gets lost in the feed; on the site the client finds it when she's actively looking, right next to the booking button. Your site works for you even at 2 a.m., when nobody's answering DMs.
Won't I look more expensive if I show my rates upfront?+
A visible price, paired with duration and what the service includes, looks fair, not expensive. What looks expensive is the unknown: when someone doesn't know the number, the mind always assumes more than reality, and often gives up before even asking.
