Photo and video reviews from customers: how to get them and why they carry more weight
A practical guide for owners: how to ask for reviews with media, why they persuade more, and how to showcase them on your site and Google.
A written review is good. A review with a real photo from the customer, showing the result they got, is something else entirely. Someone searching for a salon, a dentist or a repair shop doesn't just want words, they want proof that real people were happy. A photo or a short clip does exactly that: it turns an opinion into evidence.
The problem is that almost no customer thinks to add a photo on their own. Not because they don't want to, but because they don't know it's possible and don't have the right moment. The good news: getting reviews with media isn't hard if you ask the right way, at the right time, and make it easy. In this article I'll show you exactly how, without tricks and without breaking Google's rules.
Why a review with a photo persuades more than a written one
Text can be written by anyone. A photo of the real result, on the other hand, is hard to fake and reads instantly. The person searching no longer has to imagine the haircut, the cake or the renovated apartment, they see it.
Media adds three things text alone can't:
- Credibility: a real face, a real space, a real result.
- Context: the exact color, the size, the atmosphere of the place.
- Emotion: a customer smiling next to the repaired car says more than five sentences.
On top of that, reviews with photos tend to be shown more prominently, both on your Google profile and on your site, because they stop the eye. A visitor who pauses one extra second is a visitor closer to calling you.
Timing matters more than the wording of the request
The biggest mistake is asking for the review a week later, through a generic message. By then the excitement has faded and the customer is busy.
Ask at the peak of the joy: the moment the customer sees the result and is visibly happy. At the salon, when they look in the mirror. At the shop, when they pick up the car. At a photographed event, when they get the first photos.
In that moment, say it simply and warmly: 'I'm so glad you love it. A review would help us a lot, and if you can attach a photo of the result, that would be perfect, it carries much more weight for people looking for us.'
People say 'yes' when they're happy and when you ask directly, person to person, not through a cold message sent later.
Make it easy: reducing friction is everything
The more steps a customer has to take, the more often they give up. Your goal is for everything to be solved with a few taps on the phone.
A few practical things:
- Prepare a direct link to the Google review form and put it in a QR code, at the front desk or on the receipt. The customer scans and lands right there.
- Send the link on WhatsApp immediately, while the customer is still with you, not the next day.
- Remind them explicitly that they can attach a photo, many don't know the button exists.
- If you already took a good photo, ask if they can upload it themselves, from their own account, so the review stays authentic.
The shorter the path, the more reviews with media you'll collect.
The rules you have to respect
Reviews with media only work if they're real. Google clearly forbids fake, bought or incentivized reviews, and it can remove them or even penalize your profile.
So:
- Don't offer money, discounts or gifts in exchange for a review. You can ask, you can't pay.
- Don't write the review yourself and don't upload the photo from your own account pretending to be a customer.
- Get the customer's consent if they appear in a photo, especially their face, it's their personal data.
Also, be careful with reviews you move onto your own site: display them with the real name only with the person's consent. It's fair to the customer and it protects you. An authentic review, obtained honestly, is anyway the one that persuades most in the long run.
Showcase reviews with media on your site
Many businesses collect great reviews and leave them buried on Google. A well-built site brings them forward, exactly where a visitor hesitates before contacting you.
What works:
- A section with real reviews, showing the customer's photo or the result, near the contact button.
- A small 'before and after', where it makes sense, stronger than any sales copy.
- Short video reviews, a few seconds long, playing right on the page.
At MPO Web Studio we build exactly this kind of page, with a reviews section designed to persuade, not just to exist. We work remotely across the country and we build you a free demo first, so you can see how your site would look with the reviews placed correctly, before you pay anything. If you'd like to talk, message us on WhatsApp, we reply person to person.
Frequently asked questions
Can I offer a discount to customers who leave a review with a photo?+
I don't recommend it. Google forbids reviews incentivized with money, discounts or gifts, and it can remove them or penalize your profile. You can ask for the review, but you can't buy it. A sincere thank you and the right moment bring real results, without risk.
The customer wants to leave a review but doesn't know how to attach the photo. What do I do?+
Just tell them: after they write the review on Google, an add-photos button appears right there, on the same screen. Most people don't notice the button. A short reminder, on the spot, solves it in seconds.
Can I upload the customer's photo to their review myself?+
No, the review and the photo must come from the customer's own account, otherwise it isn't authentic and you're breaking the rules. You can, however, send them the photo on WhatsApp and ask them to upload it themselves when they leave the review.
How do I make reviews count on my site, not just on Google?+
Display them in a visible section, near the contact button, with the real photo and the customer's name, only with their consent. A well-built site can pull in the reviews and show them exactly where the visitor decides whether to call you or not.
