A points-based loyalty system for your customers: how to put it on your site

A practical guide for merchants: how to build a digital points program that brings customers back, without the lost paper punch cards.

A happy customer comes back when they have a concrete reason to. The cardboard card with stamps works, but it tears, gets lost, and tells you nothing about who your people actually are. A digital points system solves exactly that: the customer earns points on every purchase, sees them on their phone, and gets a reward when they hit a threshold.

The good news is you don't need an expensive app with a corporate budget. You need a few clear rules, a place where the customer can see their balance, and a simple way to accumulate points. In this article I'll show you how to think through the program before you touch any technical button, what implementation options exist, and how to connect it to your site without turning everything into a six-month project.

Rules first, technology second

The most common mistake is hunting for an app before you know what you're rewarding. Settle these on paper, in this order:

  • What a point is worth. For example, 1 currency unit spent = 1 point. Easy for the customer and for you.
  • The reward and the threshold. A discount, a free product, a bonus service at a certain number of points.
  • How points are earned. Only on purchases? Also for a review, a referral, a birthday visit?
  • How long they stay valid. Expiration nudges people to return, but too aggressive and it annoys them.

If these rules aren't clear to a ten-year-old, the customer won't use them. Write them in a single sentence before you open any platform.

Three ways to implement it, from simple to complete

Not every business needs the same level.

  • Manual, on your phone. A spreadsheet where you note the customer and their points, plus a WhatsApp message when they reach the threshold. Zero cost, but it eats time and doesn't scale.
  • An off-the-shelf platform. Loyalty services that connect to your online store or point of sale, with a digital card in Apple/Google Wallet. You pay monthly, but it runs on its own.
  • Built into your own site. The customer creates an account, sees their points balance in that account, and points are added automatically on every order.

If you sell online or want everything under your brand, the built-in option is the cleanest. If you're just starting, a spreadsheet plus WhatsApp validates the idea without spending a penny.

How to actually connect it to your site

When you want the program right on your site, you need three pieces working together:

  • A customer account. The customer signs in, so you know whose points are whose.
  • A place where points are stored. Each order or action adds or subtracts points, with a history.
  • A balance page. The place where the customer sees their points, the next threshold, and rewards already earned.

If you have a store on a well-known platform, there's often a loyalty module you can activate and configure. If your site is custom-built, the program is built directly into it, which means full control: rules exactly as you want them, and data that stays yours, not a third-party app's.

How to make it actually bring people back

A points system nobody uses is just extra code. What makes the difference is communication:

  • Tell the customer their balance right at checkout. "You have 240 points, 60 more for your discount."
  • Send a short message when they're close to a threshold. People return for something they've almost earned.
  • Make the reward visible and desirable, not a discount everyone already gets anyway.
  • Don't complicate the rules mid-way. A change that cuts people's points destroys trust instantly.

A loyalty program isn't marketing magic. It's a promise you keep. Keep it simple and fair, and customers come back without you pushing them.

What it costs and where to start

An off-the-shelf solution usually has a monthly subscription based on your number of customers. A system built into your site has an upfront build cost, but then you own it with no recurring monthly fees to an external app.

At MPO Web Studio we build the points program directly into your site, under your brand, with transparent rules and without holding your data hostage. We deliver remotely, across the whole country, and we prepare a demo you see before you pay anything, so you know exactly how it looks before deciding.

If you'd like to see what a loyalty system would look like for your business, drop us a message on WhatsApp. We'll tell you honestly whether you need one or whether a simple spreadsheet is enough for now.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a mobile app for a points program?+

Not necessarily. Most customers won't download yet another app. A digital card in Apple/Google Wallet or an account page on your site works just as well and requires no installation.

How hard is it to accumulate points automatically?+

It depends on where you sell. In an online store, points are added automatically on every order. In a physical store, you need either a point of sale that connects to the system, or a manual step where you scan or enter the customer at payment.

Should points expire?+

A moderate expiration, say after a year of inactivity, motivates people to come back. But if they expire too fast or you change the rules abruptly, customers feel cheated and abandon the program. Be transparent from the start.

What do I risk by giving too many points?+

Your margin. Calculate the reward as a share of the sale before you launch. If a customer gets a free product too easily, the program costs you instead of helping. A prudent ratio between what the customer spends and what they get keeps things healthy.

Can I start simple and grow later?+

Yes, it's actually recommended. Start with a spreadsheet and WhatsApp messages to see if people really respond. If it works, move everything into a system built into your site. That way you don't pay for complexity until you have proof it's worth it.
