How to fill your guesthouse in the off-season: packages and offers for the dead months

Concrete package ideas, offers and campaigns that bring bookings when rooms sit empty — plus how to put them online fast.

The off-season doesn't mean people stop travelling. It means they no longer have an obvious reason to come. Summer and the holidays sell themselves; in January, March or November, the traveller needs a ready-made idea — a package, an experience, a price worth the trip. If your guesthouse sits empty in the dead months, it's usually not a demand problem, it's an offer problem.

The good news: you don't need a big ad budget to fill rooms off-season. You need a few well-designed packages, a clear message, and a place where someone can book in a couple of minutes. In this article I'll show you the packages that actually work when it isn't peak season, how to build them without wrecking your pricing, and how to put them online fast so you can start taking bookings.

Why the rooms sit empty (and what actually changes it)

The first mistake is waiting for the phone to ring. Off-season, spontaneous demand is low, so you have to create the occasion yourself. The second mistake is simply slashing the price with big percentages, hoping cheap will pull people in — that erodes your value and attracts exactly the guests who complain the most.

What really moves the needle is giving people a reason to come now. The off-season traveller doesn't necessarily want cheaper; they want to feel they made a good choice: quiet, more spacious rooms, personal attention, a good meal, a winter landscape. Reframe "it's a slow season" as "it's the season when the mountain, the lake, the resort is almost yours alone" — and build your packages around that idea.

Packages that work in the dead months

Don't sell "a room." Sell a complete experience, with a round, easy-to-grasp price:

  • Weekend escape: 2 nights with breakfast and one dinner included, single price. The guest doesn't have to calculate anything.
  • 3 nights for the price of 2, valid mid-week (Mon-Thu) — fills exactly your emptiest days.
  • Themed package: relaxation (hot tub/sauna), a guided local hike, or a food package with regional products.
  • Whole-place buyout: rent the entire guesthouse to a group or a large family — ideal for birthdays and small events.
  • Winter retreat/coworking: good internet, quiet, a leisurely breakfast — for remote workers.
  • Gift voucher: sold now, redeemed a few months later. You get paid in the off-season and fill a room on a weak day.

How to build an offer without wrecking your pricing

The golden rule: add value before you cut the price. A richer breakfast, an included dinner, late check-out or hot-tub access cost little but lift perceived value a lot — and keep your reference price intact for peak season.

When you do discount, anchor it to a clear condition: "third night free," "special price Mon-Thu only," "early-bird for bookings two weeks ahead." That makes the discount feel earned, not desperate.

Add a real limit too: a set number of rooms at that price, or a deadline. Honest urgency (not fake) turns a traveller who's "still thinking" into one who books today. And always keep a pricier anchor package next to the promotional one — it makes the offer look even better.

How to put them online fast

You don't need a new website to launch a package. You need a clear place where someone sees the offer and can book right away.

The minimum that brings bookings:

  • A simple page on your site with the package, what's included, the price and the dates.
  • A WhatsApp button or a short form (name, dates, number of people) — as few fields as possible.
  • The same information on your Google profile and on Facebook/Instagram, linking to the page.

If you don't have a site yet, or it's clunky, at MPO Web Studio we first build a free demo of your page — you see it before you pay anything, we work fully remotely, with transparent pricing. The point is to go from "I have an offer in my head" to "anyone can book it" in days, not weeks, so you catch the dead month that's coming, not next year's.

Where to distribute the offer to fill rooms

A good page is useless if no one sees it. The cheapest channel is your list of past guests: send a WhatsApp message or a short email to people who've stayed before. They're the easiest to win back.

Then:

  • Google Business: add the package as a post and refresh your cold-season photos.
  • Local Facebook groups (hiking, weekend escapes, parents, your region) — no spam, a real offer.
  • OTAs (Booking, etc.) for visibility, but always push the direct booking, where you pay no commission.

Don't fall for "we guarantee #1 on Google" promises — no serious partner guarantees that. What you can control is a clear offer, a fast page, and a message sent to the right people, consistently, a few weeks before every slow month.

Frequently asked questions

How big should the off-season discount be?+

Don't start with the percentage. First add value (a meal included, an extra night, sauna/hot-tub access). If you still discount, tie it to a clear condition — third night free, or a special mid-week price — so you don't lower your reference price for peak season.

Which package sells most easily out of season?+

Usually the weekend escape with a meal included, and the gift voucher. The first is easy to understand and book; the second brings cash now and fills a room on a weak day months later. Test two or three packages and keep the ones that bring bookings.

How long does it take to put a package online?+

A simple offer page, a WhatsApp button and a short form can be done in days, not weeks. At MPO we first build a free demo you see before paying, working remotely, so you catch the dead month that's coming up.

Is it worth selling through Booking or only direct?+

Both. OTAs give you visibility with travellers who don't know you, but they take a commission. Use them for discovery, then push the direct booking through your page and WhatsApp, where you keep the full price and the relationship with the guest.

How do I bring past guests back in the off-season?+

They're your cheapest channel. Send a short WhatsApp message or a personal email with the off-season package and a real deadline. A guest who stayed before and left happy books far more easily than a new one.
