My website builder subscription expired (Wix / WordPress.com) — did I lose everything?

You open your website and instead of your homepage you see an expiry notice, a platform ad, or just an error. Your first thought is that it's all gone: the text, the photos, the forms, months of work. Take a breath. In most cases nothing is lost yet — but time matters.

When a Wix or WordPress.com subscription expires, your site doesn't vanish instantly. It moves through stages: first it goes invisible to the public, then it stays suspended for a while, and only at the very end do you risk permanent deletion. This article explains exactly what happens on each platform, what you can recover yourself, and how to never end up here again.

What actually happens when your subscription lapses

Neither Wix nor WordPress.com deletes your site the second your payment fails. There's almost always a grace period where the account stays put — the site is just hidden from the public.

The typical stages are:

• The site goes offline or shows an "expired" page instead of your content.
• Your custom domain (e.g. yourbusiness.com) stops pointing to the site, but the account and data stay stored behind the scenes.
• A suspension period follows — from a few weeks to several months, depending on the platform and what you paid for.
• Only at the end, if you don't reactivate, can the content be permanently deleted.

The good news: if you act during the grace period, you usually just pay again and everything comes back exactly as it was. You rebuild nothing.

Wix: where you stand on domain and content

On Wix, when a premium plan expires, your site effectively drops back to the free state or becomes unavailable, and the custom domain disconnects. Your content — text, images, page structure — stays saved in your Wix account for a good while. It doesn't evaporate with the payment.

What to check immediately:

• Log into your Wix account with the original email. If you still have account access, you have site access, even if it's offline to visitors.
• Check the domain separately. The domain and the hosting plan are two different things — sometimes one is paid and the other isn't. An expired domain can be lost more easily than content.
• Reactivate the plan from the billing section to put the site back online.

The real problem with Wix isn't recovery — it's that the site is a "prisoner": you can't easily take your content and move it elsewhere, because Wix offers no real export.

WordPress.com: recovery and, more importantly, export

WordPress.com (the hosted platform, not self-hosted WordPress.org) works similarly: on expiry you lose paid features and the custom domain, but the content stays in the account, often reverting to a free plan with a .wordpress.com subdomain.

The big advantage over Wix: WordPress lets you do a real content export.

• Go to the admin dashboard, Tools → Export, and download the XML file with your posts, pages and structure.
• Save the images and media files separately — the XML export doesn't always include them all.
• Note your domain and its expiry date, which is often different from the plan's.

With this export file you're no longer dependent on anyone: your content can move to any WordPress host, anywhere. That's why we recommend doing the export now, while you have access, not when it's a crisis.

What to do, step by step, right now

If you've just seen the expiry notice, order matters:

• Don't create a new account and rebuild the site from scratch in a panic. The old data is almost certainly still there.
• Log into the original account with the email you used to create the site. If you no longer remember the email or password, recovering the account is priority zero.
• Check what exactly expired: the plan, the domain, or both. They're billed separately.
• If you just want the site back online, reactivate the plan — it usually returns identical.
• If you want to escape platform lock-in, do the export/backup of the content first, then decide where to move.

If your domain (yourbusiness.com) is about to expire, that's the most urgent thing. A lost domain can be bought by someone else and is hard, sometimes impossible, to recover.

How to avoid this for good

The "it expired and I'll lose everything" panic comes from two causes: platform payment is easy to forget, and the site is locked into a platform you can't extract it from.

What genuinely reduces the risk:

• Keep the domain in your name and on your email, with auto-renewal and a calendar reminder. The domain is the most valuable asset — it's your business's address online.
• Keep a copy of the content (text, photos, logo) offline, with you, regardless of platform.
• Choose a solution you can leave. A site on your own code, with the domain and files in your hands, doesn't hold you hostage.
