Local agency vs. cheap offshore agency: what are you really risking?

The offshore quote looks half the price. Here's what the price tag hides: communication, support, ownership, and who answers when things break.

You get a website quote for a few hundred euros from a team abroad, while a Romanian agency asks several times more for a similar project. The temptation is completely logical: seemingly the same result, a far smaller budget. But the right question isn't "who's cheaper" - it's "what am I actually paying extra for, and why".

This article won't tell you that "local" is automatically better. There are excellent teams abroad and weak local agencies. What I'll show you is exactly where the hidden risks appear with very cheap offers, which questions to ask before you pay, and how to properly compare two quotes that look identical on paper but aren't.

Why "the same website" costs so differently

A very low price doesn't come from nowhere. It usually comes from one of these:

  • A bought template, filled quickly with your text, with no thought about your business.
  • Work split among several people you never see or speak to.
  • Zero time spent on strategy, structure, or optimizing for customers.

None of this is illegal or immoral. The problem is you're paying for an object (a site that looks good in screenshots), not for a result (a site that brings you customers and that you can manage long term). The price gap between a serious agency and an ultra-cheap offer is, almost always, the amount of thinking put into the project. And thinking never shows up in the screenshot of a quote.

Communication: the biggest invisible cost

This is where most people lose money, even though it appears on no invoice. With a team abroad you run into:

  • Different time zones: a simple question gets answered the next day, and a two-week project stretches into two months.
  • Language and context: you explain three times what "salon booking" means or how a small Romanian business works, and the nuance gets lost.
  • Local invoicing, VAT, legal texts - small details that someone from outside doesn't have as a reflex.

It's nobody's fault. But every misunderstanding means one more round of corrections, and rounds of corrections eat exactly the money you thought you were saving. A team that understands your market from the first call shortens the road enormously.

Post-launch support: who answers six months from now?

The site isn't finished at launch - that's when its life begins. A price changes, the contact form breaks, Google asks for an update, you want a new holiday page. The real question is: half a year from now, who answers you?

With a very cheap offer and no clear contract, you're often left alone at exactly the moment you need help most. Sometimes you can't reach anyone; sometimes you don't even have access to your own site because everything sits under their accounts.

Before you pay, ask in writing: who makes changes after launch, how fast, at what cost, and on which channel you reach them. A vague answer here is the clearest warning sign there is.

Who owns the site, the domain, and the data

The nastiest risk shows up when you want to leave. Check from the start, wherever the team is based:

  • The domain is registered in YOUR name, not theirs.
  • You have admin access to the site and hosting, not only them.
  • You get the source files and content if you switch providers.
  • Your customers' data (forms, orders) is yours and complies with GDPR.

If the domain or hosting sits under someone else's account, you're basically a tenant in your own business. I've seen people forced to start from scratch because they couldn't recover a domain. This isn't a "local vs foreign" issue - it's a transparency issue. It just shows up far more often with ultra-cheap offers, because the thin margin leaves no room for a proper handover.

How to compare two quotes properly - and where MPO fits

Don't compare prices, compare what you get. Ask both teams the same questions: who actually does the work, in what language and time zone we communicate, what support includes, whose name the domain is under, whether you get the source files. The differences show up instantly.

At MPO Web Studio we work remotely across the whole country, but we're in Romania: same language, same time zone, same invoicing rules. We build a real demo of your site before you pay anything - you see the result, not a promise. Pricing is transparent, and the domain and access stay yours.

We're not claiming to be the cheapest. We're saying you'll know exactly what you're paying and who you talk to when something breaks. Want to see a demo for your business? Message us on WhatsApp - no obligation.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really risky to buy a cheap website from abroad?+

Not automatically. There are good teams everywhere. The risk rises when the price is very low AND the offer is vague on communication, support, domain ownership, and handing over the source files. If you get clear written answers on all of those, the risk drops a lot, regardless of country.

What should I ask before paying, wherever the team is?+

Five questions: Who actually works on the site? In what language and time zone do we communicate? What does post-launch support include and cost? Whose name is the domain registered under? Do I get admin access and the source files if I leave? The answers tell you far more than the price.

Does a local agency mean we have to meet in person?+

No. At MPO we work remotely across all of Romania and deliver just as well over WhatsApp, phone, and email. "Local" doesn't mean office visits - it means we share the language, time zone, and business rules, which shortens communication enormously.

I already have a cheaply-built site and I'm having problems - can you help?+

Usually yes, but it hinges on one thing: do you have access to the domain, hosting, and site? If so, we take over and fix or rebuild it. If everything is locked under the old team's accounts, the first step is recovering access. Message us on WhatsApp with your situation.

Why do you offer a free demo before payment?+

To remove exactly the risk in this article: paying on a promise and getting something else. You see a real site, built around your business, before you spend a cent. If you don't like it, you've lost nothing.
