How Long Netopia or PayU Approval Takes: Documents, Bank Account and Activation Time
The documents, bank account and real activation timeline to get approved for online card payments through Netopia or PayU in Romania.
You run an online shop, or you want to accept card payments on your site, and you're wondering how long it takes to get approved by Netopia or PayU. Short answer: the processor isn't the slow part — preparing your documents and their risk checks are. Whoever shows up with a complete file moves fast; whoever sends things piecemeal waits for weeks.
In Romania the two big processors are Netopia (mobilPay) and PayU. Both ask for roughly the same things: a registered company, a business bank account, a website that respects a few legal rules, and an onboarding form. In this article we explain exactly which documents to prepare, why the bank account matters, what delays approval, and how long it realistically takes from request to your first payment.
What documents Netopia and PayU actually ask for
The core documents are nearly identical at both processors. Get them all ready before you open the form, so you don't get stuck halfway.
- Company registration certificate (tax ID) and usually a recent certificate from the Trade Register
- ID of the administrator / beneficial owner
- Bank statement or proof of the company IBAN (where the money lands)
- Full details of the website where you'll collect payments
For a sole trader (PFA) the requirements are similar, but certain activities (financial services, gambling, supplements, subscription products) trigger extra review. If you're a new business with no history, expect additional questions about what you sell and how you deliver.
Why you need a business bank account
The processor doesn't hold your money. It just collects the payment from the customer and transfers it to you, into the company account, at an interval set in the contract (usually a few business days). That's why an IBAN in the company's name is mandatory and must be right the first time.
Two common mistakes delay everything:
- The IBAN belongs to a private individual, not the company. It won't be accepted. The account must belong to the same entity that signs the contract.
- The company name at the bank doesn't exactly match the one in the documents you submitted.
You don't need a special "e-commerce" account. A normal business current account at any Romanian bank is enough. Open it before you start onboarding, not during it.
What delays approval (and how to avoid it)
Most often the file isn't rejected — it's put on hold because something is missing. Reviewers look at both the company and the site.
Typical blockers:
- A site without complete legal pages: Terms & Conditions, Privacy Policy (GDPR), Return and Delivery policy, and real company details (name, tax ID, address).
- Unclear prices or currency, or products that aren't visible when they check.
- A business activity that doesn't match what you actually sell.
- A site still "under construction" or in maintenance when they run their review.
Simple rule: the site must look like a real, working shop on the day you request activation. A half-finished site is the single most common reason for delay.
How long it realistically takes from request to first payment
If you arrive with a complete file and a proper site, commercial approval can come within a few business days. Then comes signing the contract (often electronically) and the technical integration on the site, done in parallel.
Split the time into three stages:
- Preparing documents + bank account: entirely up to you, from a day to a week.
- Review and approval at the processor: usually a few business days if nothing is missing; longer if they ask for clarifications.
- Technical integration and testing: a few hours to a few days depending on your platform.
Realistically, an organized business ends up collecting payments within one to two weeks. What drags it out isn't the desk at Netopia or PayU — it's the back-and-forth caused by missing documents or an incomplete site.
How a well-built site helps (and how we work)
The technical integration (the pay button, the redirect to the processor, the order confirmation) is often overrated in difficulty. The hard part is passing the commercial review, and there what matters is how the site looks.
At MPO Web Studio we build sites ready for approval from the start: complete legal pages, a clear product structure, visible company details, plus the actual Netopia or PayU integration. We work remotely across the country and build you a free demo before you pay anything, so you see exactly what you get.
If you want to start accepting cards and don't know where to begin, message us on WhatsApp. We'll tell you honestly which documents you need in your case and what the site still needs to pass on the first try.
Frequently asked questions
Can I accept cards as a sole trader (PFA), or do I need a company (SRL)?+
Yes, a sole trader can be approved by Netopia or PayU. The base requirements are similar to those for a limited company. The difference is that certain higher-risk activities may trigger extra questions about what you sell and how you deliver.
Do I need a registered business before I apply?+
Yes. Both processors sign the contract with a legal entity and transfer the money into an account in that entity's name. You can't be approved as a private individual with no legal form of organization.
Netopia or PayU — which is faster?+
There's no clear winner; both approve complete files quickly and stall when documents are missing or the site isn't ready. Choose based on fees, supported payment methods, and how it integrates with your platform, not just speed.
What kind of bank account do I need?+
A normal business current account in the company's name, at any Romanian bank. You don't need a special e-commerce account. What matters is that the IBAN belongs to the entity signing the contract and the name matches the documents exactly.
What stops approval most often?+
An incomplete site at the moment of review: missing legal pages (Terms, GDPR, returns, delivery), company details not visible, or products not showing. Fix those before you request activation and you avoid most delays.
