What a website really costs you per month: domain, hosting, maintenance and the "hidden costs" nobody warns you about

It's not the launch price that surprises you — it's the invoice eleven months later. We add up every recurring cost into a real monthly budget across a full year.

Nobody panics about the price of a website at launch. The shock comes eleven months later, when a domain-renewal invoice you'd forgotten lands in your inbox — or when the payments plugin stops working and you discover the update "was on a subscription." A website doesn't cost once. It costs a little, every month, for years. And the right question isn't "what do I pay now," it's how much does this site cost me per year, all in.

Let's put the real numbers on the table, no surprises.

The four costs you pay no matter what

Every living website, whoever builds it, has four recurring costs. They aren't optional — they're the rent and utilities of your spot online.

  • The domain — your address, `yourcompany.ro`. A `.ro` is paid yearly, usually around €10–15/year. It renews once a year, and if you forget, someone else can grab it.
  • Hosting — the "land" the site sits on. It varies wildly: from a few euros a month on shared hosting to €20–40/month for something fast and stable. This is where most surprises hide.
  • The SSL certificate — the padlock in the address bar. With serious providers it's included for free; with others it shows up separately, €30–60/year. Worth checking upfront.
  • Maintenance — updates, backups, security, small changes. Without it, a site doesn't "stay put": it ages, breaks, slows down. Ours starts at €29/month.

The monthly budget, added up

To see the real picture — not the costs scattered apart — let's add them into a single budget: exactly what you pay, on average, per month, across a full year.

Recurring costRough priceMonthly equivalent
`.ro` domain~€12/year~€1
Decent hosting€8–20/month€8–20
SSL certificateoften included (€0)€0
Maintenancefrom €29/monthfrom €29
Realistic total~€38–50/month

So a well-kept company website usually costs you somewhere around €40–50 a month — that's roughly €500–600 a year, all in. Not thousands a month, as some fear. But not "free once I pay for it once," as others hope.

The build price is a separate conversation — we covered it in detail in how much a website costs. Here we're talking strictly about what flows month after month, once the site is already online.

The "hidden costs" nobody warns you about

The numbers above are the honest part. Here's what shows up on the invoice when nobody explained it from the start:

  • Domain renewal at double the price. Many firms sell you the first year cheap, then renew at a much higher rate. Ask upfront what year two costs, not just the promo.
  • Professional email. `contact@company.ro` doesn't come automatically with the site. It's often a separate cost, a few euros a month per mailbox.
  • Plugin and theme licences. On many sites, key features (advanced forms, bookings, payments) sit on annual subscriptions. Don't pay them and they stop — sometimes exactly when you need them.
  • The "small" changes. "Just change a price / an opening time / a photo" — without maintenance, every touch becomes a separate hourly invoice.
  • Migration, when you want to leave. Some firms lock you into their platform and charge you to take your own site with you. Ask from the start: "is the site mine, and can I move it?"

The rule we work by: if a cost can surprise you a year from now, you should know it today. That's why we put everything on paper from the start.

How we keep the budget predictable

We can't zero out the recurring costs — nobody can, the domain and hosting physically exist. What we can do is make sure there are no surprises:

  • A single maintenance invoice, from €29/month, covering updates, backups, security and the small changes. We don't run a stopwatch on every price edit.
  • We tell you upfront what the domain costs in year two and what's included in hosting — before you sign anything.
  • The site is yours. If you ever want to leave, you leave with it.

A website isn't a spend that ends; it's a small, steady line in your budget, like the company's phone plan. If it brings you two or three extra clients a month, that ~€45 pays for itself several times over. If you want to understand why this line is worth it in your budget, we went into detail in why I need a website.

Frequently asked questions

What does a website cost per month in total?+

For a well-maintained company website, a realistic monthly budget is around €40–50/month — roughly €500–600/year, all in: domain, hosting and maintenance. At MPO Web Studio, maintenance starts at €29/month, with the domain and hosting added on top.

Are the domain and hosting included in the price, or paid separately?+

They are recurring costs, separate from the site's build price. The `.ro` domain is paid yearly (usually around €12/year), and hosting monthly or yearly depending on the plan. We tell you upfront what each one costs and what's included, so there are no surprises at renewal.

What happens if I don't pay for maintenance?+

The site doesn't vanish immediately, but it starts to age: no more security updates, higher risk of being hacked or infected, and small problems pile up. Without backups, a single failure can mean losing your content. Maintenance from €29/month covers exactly this, plus the small changes.

What are the 'hidden costs' to watch out for?+

The most common: domain renewal at double the price in year two, professional email billed separately, annual licences for booking or payment plugins, hourly fees for every small change, and sometimes a charge to move your own site to another provider. Ask for everything on paper from the start.

Does the site stay mine if I want to switch providers?+

With us, yes — the site is yours and you take it with you if you want. It isn't like that everywhere: some firms lock you into their platform and charge you for migration. It's a question worth asking before you sign: 'is the site mine, and can I move it?'
