How Long Does SEO Take to Work? A Month-by-Month Timeline
Technical fixes show in 2–4 weeks; rankings usually move in 3–6 months. What happens at each stage and what speeds SEO up or slows it down.
SEO usually shows its first signs within 2–4 weeks (pages indexed and the first impressions in Google Search Console), and rankings move noticeably within 3–6 months. Traffic that brings steady enquiries often takes 6–12 months of work, and how fast you get there depends on the competition in your field, the age and authority of your site, and whether you are looking for customers locally or nationwide.
Below is a realistic timeline, stage by stage: what happens, what to watch, and when it is worth worrying. At the end we show you what those months looked like on our own site, as a single example, with the good numbers and the less good ones.
If you only want to know how long a new site takes to appear in Google at all, we wrote about indexing separately: how long until you show up in Google after launch. This article is about what comes after: rankings, clicks and customers.
The timeline at a glance
| Period | What happens | What you watch |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1–4 | Audit, technical fixes, indexing | Pages indexed, errors fixed |
| Months 2–3 | You appear for more and more searches, but low | Impressions rising |
| Months 3–6 | Rankings climb on the easier searches | Queries in the top 10–20, first clicks |
| Months 6–12 | The effect compounds | Steady clicks, quote requests |
Weeks 1–4: fixes and indexing
The first month is about the foundation, not traffic. You check whether Google can read the site and fix whatever gets in its way: pages that are not indexed, missing or duplicate titles, slow mobile pages, a broken sitemap. You connect Google Search Console and, if you run a local business, you sort out your Google Business Profile.
What you will realistically see: pages get indexed, and the first impressions appear for your business name and a few very specific searches. Clicks are close to zero, and that is normal. If someone shows you "spectacular results" after the first month, ask exactly which number is being measured.
Months 2–3: impressions come before clicks
At this stage Google starts showing you for more and more searches. In Search Console, impressions go up, but many of your positions are still on pages 3–5 of the results, where almost nobody clicks.
One detail scares a lot of owners: your average position can stall or even get worse exactly when things are going well. The reason is simple. You start appearing for new searches, at first in weak positions, and those pull the average down. Look at impressions and at how many different searches bring you into the results, not just at the average. You will find all of them in one place: the Performance report in Search Console, with the list of queries underneath.
Months 3–6: rankings start to move
This is where you get the first results you can actually feel. Pages that answer precise searches, usually a service plus a city, climb towards the first and second page. The first steady clicks arrive and, sometimes, the first quote requests.
Broad, heavily contested searches are still far away. That is expected: there you compete with sites that have years of history and plenty of links.
Months 6–12: the effect compounds
If the work has continued, after about 6 months SEO starts to look like an investment rather than a cost. As a rule, older pages climb as the site earns trust, new pages get picked up faster, and traffic becomes more predictable from one month to the next.
In very competitive national markets, 12 months may not be enough. That does not mean SEO is not working; it means you picked a fight with older, stronger competitors.
What speeds results up and what slows them down
| Factor | Speeds it up | Slows it down |
|---|---|---|
| Competition | Few good sites target your search | Big companies with years of SEO behind them |
| Site age | A domain with a clean history | A brand-new domain with no signals |
| Authority | Real links from relevant sites | No site links to you |
| Local or national | Searches with a city, a complete Google Business Profile | Broad searches across the whole country |
| Technical state | A fast site that Google reads easily | Blocked, slow or duplicate pages |
| Pace | Steady monthly work | Starting and stopping every two months |
Two notes. First: if your site had a major technical problem, for example important pages blocked from indexing, fixing it can bring a quick jump, because you are unlocking something that already existed. Second: authority is the slowest factor. Good links build up over months, not days, and links bought in bulk do not help you.
An example: our own site (a single case)
To move past theory, here is what those months looked like on mpowebstudio.com, a new domain. It is one case, not an average and not a promise for your site. The full story, with everything we did and what did not work, is in our own-site SEO case study; here we keep only what matters for the timeline.
The Google Search Console numbers, in 3-month windows:
| 3-month window ending | Clicks | Impressions | Average position |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18 July 2026 | 24 | 5,420 | 47.8 |
| 19 August 2026 | 151 | 25,600 | 35.4 |
| 24 September 2026 | 326 | 49,600 | 30.7 |
By month: 69 clicks in July, 128 in August, and another 128 in September, but in only 24 days.
Between June and September 2026 we worked on: technical SEO (structured data, a sitemap, hreflang for 6 languages, Core Web Vitals, with a 100/100 health score in Ahrefs Site Audit), about 1,046 articles in 6 languages published in daily waves, 260 service pages by city and industry (by 24 September), automatic IndexNow submission to Bing and Yandex, and internal links between the articles and the service pages.
What it showed us about the timeline:
- The numbers grew together. From the window ending 18 July to the one ending 24 September, impressions went from 5,420 to 49,600, clicks from 24 to 326, and the average position improved from 47.8 to 30.7.
- Specific local pages did best. The city-by-industry pages had an average position of 15.6 and a CTR of about 2.6%, roughly four times the blog articles' 0.7%. Four pages for Cluj had average positions between 2 and 5.
- Enquiries came too. On 21 September 2026 we received two quote requests from Google search on the same day.
And the limits, which matter just as much:
- In absolute terms, clicks are still modest.
- On the most competitive national searches, such as "preț site web" (website price), we were still around position 85. A domain's authority takes time and links.
- Most clicks came from articles in other languages, not from the Romanian ones.
- After 24 September we rewrote 5,703 article titles that Google was showing cut off. We have not measured the effect of that yet.
This is not a recipe to copy as is: over a thousand articles is a volume a local business does not have and usually does not need. The useful lesson is a different one: over the same period, local, specific searches ranked far higher than broad national ones.
How to tell whether it is working
- After one month: your important pages are indexed and Search Console shows no errors.
- After 3 months: impressions are rising and the list of searches you appear for keeps getting longer.
- After 6 months: you have queries in the top 10, clicks that grow from month to month, and the first contacts coming from Google.
Warning signs: after 3 months of work your impressions are flat, you get no reports with numbers from Google, or someone guarantees you the number one spot. Google itself says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking.
What this means for your budget
Because results arrive after the spending, not alongside it, plan SEO for at least 6 months before you draw conclusions. If you need customers next week, SEO alone is not the answer; at the start you can combine it with paid ads.
We collected market prices in how much SEO costs in 2026. With us, the SEO Foundation is a one-off payment from €240 (€440 with AI-search optimization), the Local plan starts at €120/month, and the Growth plan at €240/month. The Local and Growth plans are billed monthly, with no minimum term and 30 days' notice, and if a month's deliverables were not delivered, you get that month's money back. We handle technical fixes within 2–4 weeks; rankings usually move within 3–6 months, with no ranking guarantees.

Frequently asked questions
How long does SEO take to show results?+
Technical fixes and indexing usually show within 2–4 weeks, and rankings move within 3–6 months. Steady traffic that brings enquiries often takes 6–12 months of work.
Why am I not seeing SEO results after 3 months?+
Check impressions in Google Search Console first: if they are rising, SEO is working and your rankings are simply still too low to bring clicks. If impressions are flat, the cause is usually a technical problem or searches that are too competitive for a new site.
Does local SEO work faster than national SEO?+
Usually, yes. Searches with a city name have fewer competitors and your Google Business Profile helps you appear, while broad national searches need much more authority and links.
Why is my average position dropping in Search Console when impressions are up?+
Because you are starting to appear for new searches, at first in weak positions, and those pull the average down. In the first months that is not a bad sign, as long as impressions and the number of queries keep growing.
Can anyone guarantee the first page on Google?+
No. Google itself says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking. A serious guarantee is about the work, for example getting your money back for a month whose deliverables were not delivered.
