What UGC (User-Generated Content) Is and How to Use It

How to turn your customers' photos, videos and reviews into the most credible marketing material your local business has.

You have happy customers snapping photos of your product, filming you install their furniture, or dropping a kind message on WhatsApp. All of that is pure marketing gold, and most of the time it just sits unused in people's phones.

UGC (user-generated content) is exactly that: photos, clips, reviews and testimonials created by your real customers, not by you or an agency. It works because people trust an ordinary customer far more easily than a polished ad. In this article I'll show you what UGC really is, how to get it without being pushy, how to use it legally, and where to place it so it actually brings you new customers.

What UGC actually is and why it matters

UGC is any content about your business made by someone other than you: a photo of the plate at your restaurant, a clip of a client showing off her new haircut, a Google review, an Instagram story where your salon gets tagged.

The difference from an ad is simple: an ad says "we're the best", UGC shows a real person who's satisfied. Our brains filter out advertising, but we trust a recommendation from another customer. That's why a slightly imperfect phone photo often convinces better than a studio shot.

For a local business UGC is also affordable: you don't need a production budget, just happy customers and a simple system for asking for and using their material.

How to get UGC without being pushy

Most happy customers would gladly give you a photo or a review, but nobody ever asks. The secret is asking at the right moment and making it effortless.

  • Ask right after a good moment: at the end of a job well done, when the customer is visibly pleased.
  • Make it as easy as possible: a direct link, a QR code on the receipt, a pre-written message they just send.
  • Give a clear example: "A photo of the result and a line about how you found it would help us enormously."
  • Offer a small reason, not a bribe: a discount on the next visit or entry into a small draw.

Don't buy fake reviews and don't dictate what people should write. One authentic message, even a short one, is worth more than ten identical praises that reek of being ordered.

Legal rules: ask permission before you use it

This is where many owners slip up: they grab a photo off the customer's page and post it as their own material. Legally, content belongs to whoever created it, and if people appear in the frame, data protection (GDPR) applies too.

The simple rule: get explicit consent before reusing anything. A short message is enough: "We love your photo, can we use it on our site and Facebook, with a tag back to you?" Keep the "yes" (a screenshot will do).

  • Ask separately for each important channel (website, social, paid ads).
  • If children or other people appear in the clip, you need their consent too.
  • Don't edit a testimonial to change its meaning; you can trim, but not falsify.

It's a small formality that saves you big trouble and shows respect for the customer.

Where to place UGC so it brings customers

Great UGC stuck in a phone sells nothing. Placed in the right spots, it becomes your strongest sales argument.

  • On your website's homepage, next to your services: a real photo convinces better than any slogan.
  • In a reviews section with names and ideally photos, so it's clear these are real people.
  • In paid ads: customer-filmed clips often outperform studio ones, because they don't "smell" like advertising.
  • On Google Business and in Stories, where people look for proof before calling you.

An important technical detail: heavy photos and clips slow your site down, and a slow site drives away the very customers you're trying to win. Material needs to be optimized (correct size and format) so it loads fast on a phone.

How we help on the website side

At MPO Web Studio we build websites for local businesses and deliver remotely across the country. We like the UGC side because it's honestly effective: we don't sell you promises, we put your customers' real proof where it counts.

What we actually do: we integrate your photos, clips and reviews into a clean section, optimize them so they don't slow your site down, and set up a place where you can easily add new testimonials yourself, without calling us every time.

We work with a free pre-built demo (see the result before you pay anything) and transparent pricing, no hidden costs. Be wary of anyone promising "guaranteed #1 on Google" — no such thing exists.

If you want to turn customer satisfaction into material that brings new customers, send us a message on WhatsApp and we'll show you how it would look on your site.

Frequently asked questions

What if no customer sends me photos or reviews?+

Most likely nobody is asking. Start by actively asking at the right moment (right after a job well done) and make the process as simple as possible: a direct link or a QR code. A pre-written message the customer just forwards greatly increases your odds.

Can I use a customer's photo without asking permission?+

It's not advisable. Content belongs to whoever created it, and if people appear, data protection applies. Always get explicit consent, even via a short message, and keep proof of it (a screenshot of the "yes" is enough).

Doesn't phone UGC look too unprofessional?+

No. That very imperfection is what makes it credible. People recognize and trust a real customer photo more easily than a studio one. What matters is that it's clear and well-lit, not that it's perfect.

How many reviews or clips do I need for it to matter?+

There's no magic number. A few authentic testimonials with names and photos convince more than dozens of generic, identical praises. Quality and authenticity beat quantity every time.

Won't lots of photos slow my site down?+

They will, if they aren't optimized. Large files load slowly, especially on mobile, and drive visitors away. That's why material must be resized and saved in the right format before publishing — we do this automatically on the sites we build.
