What is a CDN and do you need one?
What a CDN is, how it speeds up a site, when it's actually worth it, and why for most small businesses modern hosting already gives you one for free.
A CDN (Content Delivery Network) is a network of servers spread around the world that keep copies of your website and deliver them to each visitor from the server closest to them. In practice, instead of a customer in Timișoara waiting for data coming from a server in the US, they get the same images and files from a server a few hundred kilometres away. The result: your site loads faster. And the good news is that for most small businesses in Romania, you don't have to buy a CDN separately — modern hosting already includes one.
How a CDN speeds up your site
When someone opens a site, the browser has to download files: images, fonts, code. The further away the server is physically, the more each file arrives with a small delay (called latency). A CDN shortens that distance.
What a CDN actually does:
- Serves from the nearest point. Images and static files are copied to "nodes" in many cities. The visitor gets them from the closest one.
- Keeps content cached. Files that don't change often (logo, photos, CSS) are kept ready to deliver, without being regenerated every time.
- Takes load off your server. When you get a spike in visitors, the CDN absorbs the requests so your main server doesn't choke.
- Adds a layer of security. Many CDNs filter out simple attacks and offer basic protection against malicious traffic spikes.
The difference is felt most by visitors far from your server and on weaker mobile connections — exactly where a slow site loses customers.
When a CDN is actually worth it
A CDN isn't a magic fix for every speed problem. It's worth it mainly in these situations:
| Situation | Do you need a CDN? |
|---|---|
| Local presentation site, customers in the same city/county | Not necessarily — good hosting is enough |
| Visitors from across the country or abroad | Yes, it helps visibly |
| Online shop with many product images | Yes, recommended |
| Traffic that spikes suddenly (campaigns, ads) | Yes, it protects the site |
| Many heavy files: video, PDFs, galleries | Yes |
If you're a salon, a clinic or a workshop serving customers from a single area, fast hosting and optimised images matter more than a CDN. Real speed comes, in order of importance, from: optimised images, clean code, good hosting and only then a CDN. A CDN on top of a site with 5 MB photos fixes nothing.
What modern hosting gives you for free
This is the part that saves real money. The modern platforms we build sites on already include a CDN, at no separate cost:
- Vercel and Netlify automatically deliver sites through a global network — the CDN is built into how the platform works.
- Cloudflare has a generous free plan that puts a CDN and basic protection over almost any site.
- WordPress.com and other hosted platforms already serve content from a distributed network.
In other words, if your site is built on a modern platform, you most likely already have a CDN without knowing it. There's no point paying for a separate one "just to be safe". At MPO Web Studio we build sites directly on such platforms, so speed comes from how they're built, not from an expensive add-on.
How to check whether you actually need more
Before you pay for anything, measure. A free test like PageSpeed Insights (from Google) or GTmetrix shows you where you're losing seconds. Most of the time the problem isn't the lack of a CDN, but:
- images that are too large and unoptimised;
- too many scripts and plugins;
- cheap, slow hosting.
Fix those first. Speed matters both for customers and for how you're found — a fast site helps with local SEO and with a good experience that brings in more Google reviews.
In short
A CDN speeds up your site by delivering content from close to the visitor. It's worth it mainly if you have visitors from many areas, a shop with lots of images, or traffic spikes. But for most small businesses in Romania, modern hosting already gives you a CDN for free — you don't need to buy another. Focus first on optimised images and clean code.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a CDN for a simple presentation site?+
Usually no. If your customers are from a single area and you have modern hosting, speed comes from optimised images and clean code. A CDN becomes useful when you have visitors from many regions or traffic spikes.
Does a CDN cost extra money?+
Not necessarily. Modern platforms like Vercel, Netlify or Cloudflare already include a free CDN. You only pay separately for very large volumes or special needs, which is rare for a small business.
Will a CDN push my site higher in Google?+
Not directly, and we don't promise any position. But a fast site gives a better experience, and speed is a factor Google considers. A CDN helps with speed, not with ranking by magic.
What's the difference between a CDN and hosting?+
Hosting is where your site lives. A CDN is an extra layer that copies content to many locations so it reaches visitors faster. Many modern hosts already include this layer.
How do I know if my site already has a CDN?+
If it's hosted on Vercel, Netlify, Cloudflare or WordPress.com, you most likely already have one. We can check your site for free and tell you exactly what you have and what's missing.
