Which hosting to choose in Romania: shared, VPS or cloud, explained for a small-business owner

The word "hosting" scares people more than it should. A small-business owner doesn't want to learn what a kernel is — they want the website to work, not to crash when a traffic spike hits, and not to pay every month for a server room they never use. The whole debate between shared, VPS and cloud really comes down to one question: how much space and power do you need right now, and how fast are you growing?

Shared hosting: the apartment with neighbours

Shared means your site sits on a server together with a few hundred other sites. You split the processor, the memory and the connection — like an apartment block where everyone uses the same plumbing. It's the cheapest option and, for most small companies in Romania, it's enough for years.

When it's the right call:

• A presentation website — a plumbing firm, a dental practice, a restaurant. A few pages, a contact form, maybe a blog.
• A landing page or a portfolio site with normal traffic, not waves.
• A small budget and zero appetite for admin — the provider handles updates, basic security and backups.

Where it pinches: if a "neighbour" on the server goes wild with traffic, your site can slow down. And you have a resource limit — cross it and you'll be politely asked to upgrade. Serious Romanian providers — for example those with data centres in Cluj and Bucharest, like CyberFolks — start shared plans at a few euros a month.

VPS: your own house on shared land

VPS (virtual private server) is the next step. The physical server is still shared, but you get a guaranteed slice of processor and memory that's yours alone. Neighbours can no longer eat your resources. It's your house with a fence, even if it sits on the same land as others.

When you move to a VPS:

• An online shop with a real catalogue — hundreds of products, a cart, payments. A shop from €690 that starts selling steadily deserves guaranteed resources.
• Traffic that has grown and starts to "gasp" on shared during peak hours.
• You need control — a specific configuration, an app that requires its own settings.

Watch one word: "managed" vs. "unmanaged". An unmanaged VPS is empty land — you install everything, you fix it when something breaks at 2 a.m. A managed VPS costs a bit more, but the provider (or us, through maintenance from €29/month) keeps the technical side running. For an owner with no in-house IT person, managed is the only sane option. VPS plans at Romanian providers start from around €4–5/month for the basic tier, but the real budget with management included is a different number.

Cloud: you pay for exactly what you use

Cloud hosting spreads your site across several linked servers. If one fails, another takes over — and resources scale up automatically when a traffic wave arrives. It's like renting space that stretches on its own when you have guests and shrinks back afterwards.

When cloud makes sense:

• Unpredictable traffic — a campaign that might explode overnight, a shop with Black Friday peaks.
• You can't afford the site to go down even for 10 minutes — lost orders mean lost money.
• You're growing fast and don't want to move the site every three months.

The downside: it's more expensive, and it's easier to lose control of costs if traffic runs away. For most small companies in Romania, cloud is overkill in the first year — but it's the right answer if you sell online seriously or have seasons with sudden peaks.

What matters more than the "type"
