An AI chatbot on your company website: does it help sales or just annoy customers?
That chat bubble popping up in the corner can catch a customer at 11 PM — or scare one off in three seconds. When an AI chatbot is worth it for a small Romanian business, when it's just noise, and what it actually costs.
A visitor lands on your site at 10:40 PM, straight from a reel on their phone. They have exactly one question — „do you deliver to Cluj-Napoca too?" or „any slots left this Thursday?" — and nobody answers until morning. By then they've closed the tab and messaged a competitor who replied in two minutes. That's the gap an AI chatbot promises to close. Sometimes it really does. Other times it just adds an annoying bubble that jumps over your content and sends people back where they came from.
The question isn't „chatbot: yes or no." It's: on which site, for which questions, and who controls it.
What an AI chatbot actually does, past the hype
An old button-based chatbot ran on a script: „Press 1 for hours, 2 for prices." An AI chatbot understands a naturally written question and answers with the real information from your site — if you fed it correctly. In practice, for a small business, it does three useful things:
- Answers the same 20 questions you already get every day by phone: hours, starting prices, delivery area, „do you also do X?"
- Catches the lead at night and on weekends, while you sleep — it asks for a name and a number and drops it in your inbox for the morning
- Moves the person toward action — a booking, a form, a WhatsApp message — instead of letting them read and leave
What it does NOT do: it won't negotiate a €5,000 contract, won't calm an angry customer, and won't replace someone who knows the trade. A bot pretending it can do these annoys people more than having none.
When it genuinely helps
A chatbot makes sense when you get high volume of repetitive questions and the answer is clear, not subjective. A few concrete cases:
- A dental clinic — „any emergencies today?", „do you work with insurance?" — fixed answers, asked dozens of times a day
- An online store — „where's my order?", „how much is shipping to Cluj?" — the bot checks and answers instantly
- A guesthouse — „got a room on August 14th?", „are pets allowed?" — and it catches the booking before the person looks elsewhere
The common thread: questions with one correct answer, that repeat, and a rushed visitor who wants it now, not tomorrow.
When it just annoys
There are also situations where the chat bubble does harm:
- Niche service with a custom quote — a plumber who prices only after seeing the job. Here the bot says „it depends" ten times and the person leaves frustrated. A simple WhatsApp button is more honest.
- Sensitive topics — delicate health, money, situations where the person is stressed. A robotic reply to a real worry is worse than no bot at all.
- The aggressive bubble — that auto-jumps over content after two seconds, with sound, on mobile, covering exactly the button you needed. That's not help, it's an obstacle.
The rule we work by: anything standing between a visitor and one more action must be removed. A badly built chatbot is exactly that kind of obstacle.
The legal part you can't skip
The European regulation on artificial intelligence (EU AI Act, Art. 50) introduces the obligation for a chatbot on a website to clearly inform the user that they're talking to an artificial intelligence, not a human. These transparency obligations apply in phases — check the exact deadline at the time you implement. On top of that, GDPR fully applies: if the bot collects a name and a phone number, you need consent, a privacy policy, and care about where the data goes. This isn't a technical detail to overlook — it's mandatory.
In practice, this means a short message like „I'm company X's virtual assistant" and a link to the privacy policy. Simple, but necessary.
What it costs and which choice makes sense
An AI chatbot isn't a big expense, but it isn't free long-term either. You usually pay a monthly subscription to the platform running the bot, plus the work of configuring it and „feeding" it your real answers. A bot left on its own, with outdated info, lies to customers — and that costs you more than the subscription.
With us, if we add it to a site, it fits naturally on top of the structure we already build:
| Service | Price |
|---|---|
| Landing page | €290–490 |
| Presentation site | €490–890 |
| Online store | from €690 |
| Monthly maintenance | from €29/month |
| AEO/GEO (answers inside AI) | from €290 |
Honest: for many small businesses, a well-placed WhatsApp button brings more real conversations than an AI chatbot — because people prefer to write where a human replies. The chatbot becomes useful when the volume of repetitive questions is choking you. Until then, it's not a priority. If you want to be found by the AI assistants that answer instead of Google, what AEO/GEO is matters more than a chat bubble.
How to decide in five minutes
- Do you get more than 10-15 repetitive questions a day, with clear answers? → a chatbot may be worth it.
- Do you sell something subjective, negotiated, sensitive? → better a human, with WhatsApp one click away.
- Do you already have a clean, fast site? If not, do that first — a bot on a slow site saves nothing. See also why I need a website.
If you're unsure, don't buy technology for technology's sake. Start from one question: where are you losing customers right now — at night, at booking, at shipping? That's where you put the tool, not everywhere.

Frequently asked questions
Will an AI chatbot replace my phone staff?+
No, and it shouldn't. A good chatbot takes the repetitive, simple questions — hours, starting prices, delivery area — so your person has time for the conversations that truly need a human. For negotiations, sensitive situations, or unhappy customers, a human should still answer. The bot filters, it doesn't replace.
Is it legal to put an AI chatbot on my site in Romania?+
Yes, but with two conditions. The European regulation on artificial intelligence (EU AI Act, Art. 50) requires that you clearly tell the visitor they're talking to an artificial intelligence, not a human — these transparency obligations apply in phases, so check the exact deadline at the time you implement. And if the bot collects personal data (name, phone), GDPR applies: you need consent and a privacy policy. We handle these at setup — it's not something you have to do alone.
How much does an AI chatbot cost monthly for a small business?+
It depends on the platform and volume, but it's usually a monthly subscription plus the initial setup work. With us it sits on top of the site structure, where maintenance starts at €29/month. Important: an unsupervised bot with outdated info costs more than the subscription — because it lies to customers and you lose them.
Isn't a WhatsApp button simpler?+
Often, yes. For many small businesses, a well-placed WhatsApp button brings more real conversations, because people prefer to write where a human replies. The chatbot only becomes useful once you get a high volume of repetitive questions eating your day. Until then, WhatsApp is more honest and cheaper.
Does a chatbot help me rank higher on Google?+
Not directly — it doesn't raise your Google position. What matters for visibility today is that your site is fast, clear, and structured so it can be read by the AI assistants that answer instead of classic search. That's about AEO/GEO, not the chat bubble. A chatbot helps on-site conversion, not ranking.
