Local citations: which Romanian directories to list your business in
What local citations are, why NAP consistency matters, and the concrete list of Romanian directories where it's actually worth listing your business.
When someone in your town searches "hair salon Cluj", "plumber near me" or "dentist Cluj-Napoca", Google decides who to show on the map and in the top results based on several factors. One of the lesser-known ones is how often and how consistently your business appears across the web. Those mentions are called local citations.
The trouble is that most owners do one of two things: they ignore citations entirely, or they pay for "500-directory" packages that do nothing. The truth sits in the middle. In this article I'll explain what citations actually are, which Romanian directories are genuinely worth joining, and how to do it right without wasting money.
What local citations are, and what "NAP" means
A local citation is any online mention of your business details. In local SEO the key term is NAP: Name, Address, Phone. Every time those three appear together on the web — in a directory, on a Facebook page, in an article — you have a citation.
There are two kinds: structured (directory listings, where you fill in fields) and unstructured (a mention inside an article or blog post). Google uses them as a signal of trust and of the business genuinely existing.
The part few people grasp: consistency matters more than quantity. If your address appears written three different ways and with two phone numbers, the signal gets diluted. Ten identical listings beat fifty contradictory ones.
The foundation: your Google Business Profile
Before any directory, sort out your Google Business Profile. It's free and it's the single biggest lever for local visibility — the profile that shows up with a map, hours, reviews and photos.
Treat it as your "source of truth". Write the business name, address and phone a certain way here, then copy them identically everywhere else. Same form of the name, same spelling of the address, same number.
Two free companions, also on maps and in search: Bing Places for Business and Apple Business Connect (for Apple Maps). They're used less in Romania, but they take a few minutes to fill in and cover iPhone and Microsoft users.
General Romanian directories worth joining
You don't need hundreds of listings. A handful of relevant Romanian directories, filled in correctly, does the job. The ones that matter most often:
- Pagini Aurii (paginiaurii.ro) — the classic, still well indexed
- Cylex Romania (cylex-romania.ro) — large database, free listing
- Lista Firme (listafirme.ro) and Firme.info — pull data from the company registry
- Infoafaceri (infoafaceri.ro)
- ROL.ro
- Tuugo.ro
- Bizoo.ro
- Anuntul.ro / classified directories
Nearly all have a free tier that's enough to start. Don't rush to pay for "premium" until you've confirmed the basic profile is complete and correct everywhere.
Niche directories and adjacent platforms
Beyond the general ones, your industry dictates where else you appear:
- Hospitality (restaurants, cafés): TripAdvisor and reservation platforms
- Beauty and wellness: the online booking apps where clients search directly
- Tourism and lodging: Booking, TripAdvisor, regional portals
- Any business: your Facebook page and Instagram profile — with the address written exactly the same
Foursquare is worth a mention: it feeds many other maps and apps, so one listing there propagates further.
The rule holds everywhere: pick the platforms your real customers use, not every directory that exists. A listing on an irrelevant portal helps no one.
How to list correctly, step by step
A few practical rules that separate useful work from wasted time:
- Write your NAP once, in a document, and copy it identically everywhere. No improvising.
- One phone number and one form of the address. "St." or "Street", but consistently.
- Search for your business on Google before adding new listings — old duplicate profiles often already exist that you can claim or merge.
- Add photos, hours and the correct category wherever the platform allows. A complete profile is taken more seriously.
- Avoid packages promising "hundreds of international directories". A directory in another country, with no Romanian traffic, brings you no local customers.
Common mistakes and where to get help
The most frequent traps: NAP details written differently from place to place; fake reviews (Google detects them and can penalize you); and neglect after setup — you move, change your hours or number, but the listings stay stale. Check them from time to time.
Citations don't work miracles on their own. They're one brick in the local SEO foundation, alongside real reviews, a fast website and a well-kept Google profile. The effect shows over weeks and months, not overnight — and be sceptical of anyone promising a "guaranteed #1 spot on Google".
If you'd rather not handle it manually, at MPO Web Studio we can build that foundation for you — Google profile, consistent listings, a fast site — remotely, at a transparent price, with a demo built before you pay anything. A message on WhatsApp and we'll tell you honestly what you need.
Frequently asked questions
How many directories are enough?+
It's not the number that counts, it's the accuracy. A well-set-up Google Business Profile plus a handful of relevant Romanian directories (Pagini Aurii, Cylex, Lista Firme, Firme.info, and two or three suited to your industry) covers most of the benefit. Beyond that, the extra gain is small.
Does it matter if the address is written slightly differently each place?+
Yes, more than you'd think. If the address or number appear in different forms, Google has a harder time confirming it's the same business, and the signal gets diluted. Settle on one form of the name, address and phone, and use it identically everywhere.
Do I have to pay for listings?+
Not to get started. Almost all the important Romanian directories have a free tier that's enough. Pay for premium only if you see it bringing real traffic, not out of reflex. And "hundreds of directories" packages are almost always a waste.
Do citations help if I work only at the client's site, with no physical premises?+
Yes, with a nuance. You're a "service-area" business: in your Google profile you can hide the exact address and define the area you serve. Citations still help, but emphasize consistency of the name and phone, since the address is less publicly visible.
How long until I see an effect?+
Weeks to a few months, not overnight. Citations build trust over time, together with reviews and a well-kept site. Anyone promising instant results or a "guaranteed #1" either doesn't understand how it works or is misleading you.
