How to update your own website's text and photos without calling the developer every time

Once the site is live, you want to change a price, a photo, or your holiday hours yourself — not wait three days for a reply. Here's what you can safely change, what to never touch, and how to avoid "breaking" anything.

The most frustrating moment isn't when you have no website. It's when you have one, a price changes from 120 to 140 lei, and you have to message someone, explain what you want, wait, then check they typed the right number. Three days for one figure. Meanwhile a customer sees the old price, comes in, and there's an argument at the till. A website you can't touch yourself isn't really yours — it's a brochure someone else keeps in a drawer.

The good news: most day-to-day changes need no developer and no line of code. They need five minutes and a little confidence. Below we tell you exactly what to change yourself, where to stop, and how to avoid making the page look crooked.

What you can change yourself, with no worries

If your site is built properly, you have an admin panel — a screen you log into with a username and password and edit the content like a Word document. There, without touching anything technical, you can change:

  • The text — service descriptions, the "about us", a new paragraph, a typo fix. Click the text, type over it, save.
  • Prices and the service list — the thing that changes most often. A new item on the menu, a price increase, an offer removed.
  • Photos — swap an old photo for a new one, add recent work to the gallery, change the cover image.
  • Hours and contact — holiday hours, a new phone number, a moved address, a WhatsApp link.
  • Posts and announcements — "this week we're open until 8 PM", a blog post, a seasonal promotion.

The rule we work by at MPO Web Studio, our team in Cluj-Napoca: anything that changes often, you should be able to change yourself, in the panel, without calling us. A good website makes you independent, not dependent.

Where you touch nothing

This is the part that scares people — and honestly, a little fear is healthy here. There are areas where one wrong change really can throw the site off. Remember it simply: if it doesn't look like text or a photo, it's not your job.

  • The page structure and "layout" — don't move blocks, don't delete whole sections, don't play with the spacing. This is where mobile alignment breaks without you noticing.
  • Settings, modules, "plugins" — if you see a "disable" button next to something you don't understand, don't touch it. Plenty of sites have gone completely blank from a plugin disabled by mistake.
  • Code, HTML, CSS, any window full of brackets and symbols — if you've landed on a screen full of code, you took a wrong turn. Get out of there.
  • The domain, hosting, email, DNS — these are the site's "plumbing". One setting moved here can take the site offline or stop your emails. You don't poke at them out of curiosity.
  • Big "one-click" updates — sometimes buttons appear offering to update everything at once. It sounds good, but it sometimes breaks things. Leave those to someone who can rebuild the site if something goes wrong.

The commonsense test before pressing anything: *if I press this and it goes wrong, do I know how to undo it?* If the answer is no, don't press it. Call us first.

How to avoid "breaking" something — four simple habits

You don't need technical knowledge to work cleanly. You need four reflexes:

  • Make one change at a time — change the text, save, look at the live site to check it's fine. Only then move to the next one. If you change ten things at once and something breaks, you no longer know which one did it.
  • Check on your phone, not just your computer — most of your customers see you on mobile. Text that fits nicely on a laptop can spill out of its box on a phone.
  • Photos — size matters — a photo straight from your phone can be 8 MB and slow your page down. Ideally, resize it first. If you don't know how, ask us for a one-line guide.
  • Don't change anything important on a Friday evening — if a problem shows up, you'll fix it on Monday. Sensitive changes are made when you have time to check.

When it's still worth calling us

Autonomy doesn't mean doing absolutely everything yourself. Some things are cheaper and faster if you leave them to us:

  • a whole new page, with structure and design, not just text;
  • a new form, online booking, an integration with something;
  • the site has become slow, throws errors, or "went down";
  • you want a section that looks like the rest of the site, not improvised.

That's exactly what maintenance from 29 €/month is for: you're not paying us to change a price you could change yourself in two minutes, but to have someone who keeps the site updated, secure, and working, and who steps in when it's really needed. You handle what's easy and frequent; we handle what's technical and rare.

As for price, if you're wondering where a site you can actually manage yourself starts, we've written at length about how much a website costs. And if you're still deciding whether you need one at all, here's why you need a website.

How we hand over, so you depend on no one

With every site we deliver, we also give you the "keys": access to the panel, a password of your own, and a short guide — two or three minutes of showing you, not a 40-page manual — with exactly the buttons you'll use often. Prices, photos, hours, contact. The rest stays neatly locked, so there's no way to accidentally touch what you shouldn't.

That's the difference between a "rented" website, where you depend on someone else for every comma, and a website that's truly yours. We build the second kind.

Frequently asked questions

Can I really update my own website, with no technical knowledge?+

Yes, if the site is built with an admin panel — and that's how we build them. Text, prices, photos, hours, and contact are changed like in a document: click, type over, save. You need no code and no experience. At handover we show you in two or three minutes exactly the buttons you'll use often.

What do I risk breaking if I start editing myself?+

Text and photo changes are safe — worst case, you just save the correct version again. Problems only arise if you touch the page structure, settings or plugins, code, or the domain, email, and hosting. The rule is simple: if it doesn't look like text or a photo, don't touch it. And if you don't know how to undo a change, call us first.

How do I change a photo without slowing down the site?+

A photo straight from your phone can be 8 MB, which loads the page heavily. Ideally, resize it before uploading (there are free apps that do this in one click). If you have maintenance with us, you can send us the photos and we optimize them, or we give you a short guide on doing it yourself in 30 seconds.

If I have 29 €/month maintenance, is it still worth learning to edit myself?+

Yes, for speed. You change a price or holiday hours yourself in two minutes, without waiting for a reply. Maintenance is for what's technical, sensitive, or rare: new pages, errors, big updates, security, backups. The idea is that you handle what's easy and frequent, and we handle what really needs a specialist.

What happens if I do break something by mistake?+

If you have maintenance with us, we keep backups and restore the site to its good state, usually the same day. That's why we recommend making one change at a time and checking on your phone after each one — that way, if something goes wrong, we know exactly what changed and fix it quickly, without you losing content.
