How to Add Your Business to Google Maps Step by Step

A practical, 2026-updated guide: how to create and claim your business listing on Google Maps, pass video verification, optimize it, and avoid the mistakes that cost you visibility.

To add your business to Google Maps, go to google.com/business, sign in with a Google account, search for your business name (an unclaimed listing may already exist), and click "Add your business to Google." Fill in the name, category, address or service area, and contact details, then complete a verification step — one of the steps may be a short video filmed on your phone. Once Google confirms the listing, it appears in Search and Maps. Below, each step is explained concretely, plus the mistakes that can get your listing blocked.

Why do you need a Google Maps listing?

Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the only way to appear in the local map and in the "3-pack" of results shown when someone searches "hair salon Cluj-Napoca" or "plumber near me." It's free, managed from a Google account, and for many local businesses it brings more calls than the website in the first months. To understand its role in your overall online presence, read why I need a website and local SEO.

How do you create or claim the listing?

1. Go to google.com/business and sign in with the business's Google account (ideally a dedicated one, not your personal account).

2. Search for the business name. If a listing already appears (auto-created by Google or a customer), click "Claim" instead of creating a new one — otherwise you end up with duplicates.

3. Choose the primary category as precisely as possible (e.g. "Beauty salon," not "Store"). The category directly affects which searches you show up in.

4. Set the location type: a physical address customers can visit (shop, salon) OR a service area, if you travel to the client (plumber, cleaning). You can combine both.

5. Add phone, website, and hours. If you don't have a website yet, a simple page helps conversion a lot.

How do you pass Google verification?

Verification confirms the business is real and at the stated address. Possible methods: a code by postcard (PIN), phone/SMS, email, or video. For many small businesses, video verification is a common option.

For the video, the rules that matter:

  • You film live from the Google Maps app, on your phone, in a single continuous shot of at least 30 seconds. Pre-recorded videos uploaded later are not accepted.
  • You show the business name on a permanent fixture (illuminated sign, window, wall) — it must match the name in your listing exactly.
  • You show the surroundings (street numbers, neighboring businesses) to confirm the location.
  • For businesses without a visible storefront, you show the equipment, tools, or materials you work with.
  • No voices, no people, no music. Film in silence, without speaking.

Review takes up to 5 business days. If rejected, you can re-film.

How do you optimize the listing after verification?

ElementWhy it matters
Secondary categoriesYou appear in more relevant searches
Real photos (exterior, interior, team)Increase trust and click-through
Correct hours + special daysAvoid upset customers and penalties
Services and descriptionClearly explain what you do, in the customer's words
Reviews + repliesThe #1 local signal; see how to get Google reviews
Regular postsKeep the listing "alive" and show activity

Note: Google does not guarantee "first place." No one can. A complete listing with steady reviews and correct data gives you the best chances — but ranking depends on many factors you don't fully control.

What mistakes block your visibility?

  • A name "stuffed" with keywords ("Cheapest Best Cluj Hair Salon") — it breaks the rules and risks suspension.
  • A fake address or a P.O. box for a business without a real location.
  • Duplicate listings — creating a new one instead of claiming the existing one.
  • Inconsistent data (NAP: name, address, phone) across Maps, website, and social media.
  • Bought reviews — Google detects and removes them, sometimes with a penalty.
  • Abandoning the listing after verification, with no photos and no replies to reviews.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to add my business to Google Maps?+

It's completely free. Google Business Profile has no cost to create or manage. You only pay if you separately run Google Ads or hire someone to set up and optimize your listing.

How long until my business appears on Google Maps?+

The listing is created instantly but becomes publicly visible only after verification. Video verification can take up to 5 business days, and a postcard PIN usually arrives within 1–2 weeks in Romania.

Can I add my business if I work from home or travel to clients?+

Yes. Choose the "service area" type instead of a visible physical address. You can hide the exact address and define the cities or areas you serve — ideal for plumbers, cleaning, and mobile services.

Why doesn't my listing appear in searches even though it's verified?+

After verification, ranking depends on relevance, distance, and prominence. A new listing with few reviews and no photos rises slowly. Add real reviews, photos, services, and correct categories — and be patient for a few weeks. No one can guarantee first place.

What do I do if my video verification was rejected?+

You can re-film. The most common rejection reasons are: the name on your signage doesn't match the listing, the video has voices or people, shaky or interrupted footage, and missing surroundings. Film again in silence, in a single continuous shot, clearly showing your sign and the surroundings.
