How to Choose the Right Domain Name for Your Business

A practical guide: short and memorable, .ro vs .com, hyphen or no hyphen, how to check availability, and the mistakes to avoid when picking your domain.

Pick a name that's short, easy to type, and easy to say over the phone, one that contains your business name (not forced keywords). For a Romanian business, take `.ro` first; add `.com` if you want to protect the brand or sell abroad. Avoid hyphens, digits, and letters with diacritics, then confirm on a registrar that the domain is actually free before you print it on business cards.

How short and memorable should it be?

Simple rule: if you can't dictate it correctly over the phone on the first try, it's too long or too complicated. A good name sticks after you hear it once and is spelled without having to spell it out.

A few concrete markers:

  • Ideally under 15 characters, one word or two joined (e.g. `mpowebstudio`).
  • Easy to pronounce — the real test is saying it to a friend on the phone and seeing if they spell it right.
  • No wordplay that sounds wrong — if `k` sounds like `c` or `y` like `i`, people will type the wrong version.
  • Tied to the brand, not a category — `cheap-salon-cluj` traps you if you change city or service tomorrow.

Your business name is almost always the best choice: it's easy to recall for clients who got you by word of mouth, and it builds brand authority over time.

.ro or .com — which extension do I choose?

It depends on where your customers come from. Here's the short comparison:

SituationChoose
Customers only from Romania`.ro` (clear local signal, trust)
You want to sell abroad too`.com` as primary, `.ro` redirected
A brand you want to protectboth, even if you use only one
Minimal budget, local business`.ro` alone is enough

For most Romanian businesses, `.ro` is the right pick: it signals that you're local and is viewed well by customers in a local search. If you find the `.com` free at a reasonable price, take it too and redirect it — it costs little and blocks a competitor or a potential domain squatter. Trendy extensions (`.io`, `.店`, `.xyz`) look good on a tech startup, but for a classic Romanian business they can create confusion and distrust.

Speaking of search visibility: the domain matters far less than content and reviews. We go into this in seo-local and cum-obtii-recenzii-google.

Hyphen or no hyphen?

No hyphen, in almost every case. Hyphens seem like a fix when the name you want is taken, but they cause real problems:

  • People forget the hyphen when typing and land on another site (maybe a competitor's).
  • On the phone you have to say "hyphen" or "dash" every time, which sounds unprofessional.
  • `my-firm.ro` and `myfirm.ro` are two different domains — if you take one, a competitor can take the other.

The only reasonable exception: when the hyphen-free version forms an unwanted or ambiguous word when the pieces run together (two words that read wrong joined up). Otherwise, if the hyphen-free version is taken, better change the name than add a dash.

The same principle applies to digits and diacritics: avoid them. "Three" written as the digit `3`, or a `ș`/`ț` in the domain, always leads to mistyped variants.

How do I check if the domain is free?

Never rely on a single search. Concrete steps:

1. Search on a registrar (e.g. ROTLD for `.ro`, or any major registrar) for the exact domain you want, in the extension you care about.

2. Check nearby variants too — with/without hyphen, `.ro` and `.com` — so you know what's available to protect.

3. Search the name on Google and social media — see whether another business already uses it, even if the domain is free.

4. Check the trademark at OSIM (Romania's trademark office) if you're investing seriously in the brand, so you don't conflict with a registered mark.

A warning sign: if the domain shows up "for sale" at a high price on a resale platform, a speculator holds it. It's usually not worth paying — better pick another name.

What mistakes do businesses make most often?

From our experience, these are the most expensive:

  • Choosing a name that's hard to dictate and then losing clients who land on another site.
  • Stuffing the city or service into the domain and getting stuck when they expand.
  • Not buying the `.com` too, and someone takes it later and steals their traffic.
  • Forgetting to renew the domain — once lost, it can be bought by someone else immediately.
  • Tying the domain to a personal account of an employee or contractor instead of a company account.

The last two are the most dangerous, because they can mean losing the domain entirely. Keep the registrar login in a safe place, under the company's name, and turn on auto-renewal.

What it costs and how we help

A `.ro` or `.com` domain usually costs a few euros a year — it's the cheapest piece of the whole project. The real investment is the site that sits on it; if you want price benchmarks, we have a dedicated guide: cat-costa-un-site-web. And if you're still wondering whether it's worth the effort, see de-ce-am-nevoie-de-site.

At MPO Web Studio (a team in Cluj-Napoca, but working 100% remote across Romania) we help you choose the domain, configure it correctly, and build the site on it — from a presentation page (Landing 290–490 €) to an online store (from 690 €).

Frequently asked questions

What's better for a Romanian business, .ro or .com?+

For customers in Romania, `.ro` is usually the right pick: it signals you're local and inspires trust in a local search. If you also sell abroad or want to protect the brand, take `.com` as primary and redirect `.ro` (or vice versa). Ideally buy both if budget allows — each costs only a few euros a year.

Does the domain name matter for Google ranking?+

Very little. A keyword in the domain won't earn you better positions on its own. Useful content, site speed, reviews, and your Google Business profile matter far more. Choose a domain for the brand and memorability, not for SEO. We can't and never will promise you 'number 1 on Google'.

Is it a problem if I use a hyphen in the domain?+

In almost every case, yes. People forget the hyphen when typing and land on another site, and on the phone you have to dictate it every time. On top of that, the hyphen-free version can be taken by a competitor. If the name without a hyphen is taken, it's better to change the name than to add the dash.

How do I correctly check whether a domain is available?+

Search for it exactly on a registrar (e.g. ROTLD for `.ro`), check nearby variants with/without hyphen and in both `.ro` and `.com`, then search the name on Google and social media to see whether another business already uses it. If you're investing seriously in the brand, also check the trademark at OSIM.

What happens if I forget to renew the domain?+

After expiry, the domain enters a grace period and then becomes available to anyone — including someone who can buy it and demand money to give it back. That's why we recommend auto-renewal and keeping the registrar login under the company's name, not an employee's.
