How to Attract Cake Orders at Your Pastry Shop, Beyond the Display Case

The display case sells today's slice. The custom cake order, the 250–400 lei one, is decided on a phone, a week ahead, while scrolling photos. Here's how you win those orders.

For a pastry shop, the display case sells the 12-lei slice to whoever walks past. But the real money — the 300-lei christening cake, the dessert platter for 40 guests, the birthday cake themed on a kid's favorite cartoon — never sells from the case. It sells 5–10 days ahead, from a phone, by a mother searching at 10 p.m. after the child has fallen asleep. She doesn't walk into the shop to decide. She looks at photos, checks whether you still have room for her date, and whether you deliver. The rule we work by: the big order is won before the person ever sets foot in your shop, and all your website has to do is not lose that decision.

Get found when a mom searches "custom cake" at 10 p.m.

The searches that bring big orders aren't "pastry shop near me." They're "christening cake Cluj," "custom cake order," "wedding candy bar price," "sugar-free cake order." People want a result, not a stroll. Two things matter here: your Google profile and your topic pages. The Google profile needs the right category (Bakery / Pastry Shop), a clearly stated delivery area, and recent photos of custom cakes, not just the display case. On the site, instead of one "Products" page, you need separate pages for the orders that make money: christening cake, kids' birthday cake, candy bar / sweet table for events, dietary cakes (sugar-free, gluten-free). Each with its own photos and the words people actually search. We've written the step-by-step details on local SEO and on the Google Business Profile separately.

The lever that matters most: the photo + an easy date-first order

At a pastry shop, one lever beats all the rest: a good photo of your cakes, wired straight to an order form that asks about the date first. Nobody orders a cake they can't see. You don't need a pro photographer's portfolio — you need a clean gallery, sorted by occasion (christening, kids' birthday, wedding, corporate), shot in daylight, on a plain background, with the whole cake and one cut slice so the sponge shows. Under each category, a single button: "Get a quote for your date." And the form should ask, in this order: event date, number of servings, occasion, an inspiration photo (optional), phone. Why the date first? Because every mother's first question is "do you still have room on the 14th?" Answer that up front and you've won the conversation. An online booking / order system that shows which days are already full spares you ten "sorry, we're booked" messages. Everything between the photo and sending the order — a required account, too many fields, a hidden price — gets removed.

Reviews and trust: a cake is a promise for an important day

Someone ordering a christening cake isn't buying a product, they're buying the peace of mind that the day won't be ruined. That's why reviews from real events are worth more than any copy on your site. Ask for the review at the right moment: not when they pick up the cake, but the day after the event, with a short WhatsApp message — "We hope the christening went well! If you have a minute, a Google review helps us enormously." By then they're still moved and have the party photos too. The full method is in our guide on how to get Google reviews. On the site, place reviews next to photos of cakes for the same occasion — a mom's review from a christening, right under the christening-cake gallery. Add the reassuring details too: allergen list, sugar-free / gluten-free options, how far ahead to order, delivery area and cost. Each one is one less reason to hesitate.

Season and returning customers: don't wait for them to find you

A pastry shop lives on seasonal peaks: June 1st (Children's Day), Easter, Christmas, March 8th, and the May–September wedding-and-christening run. Whoever starts promoting Easter cozonac two weeks before Easter has already lost half the orders. Build a seasonal page in advance (Easter cozonac order, June 1st cake, corporate Christmas platters) with a visible order deadline — "orders until April 18th." And the customer who orders a christening cake today will need a first-birthday cake in 10 months, then one every birthday after. Save the date and message them ahead of time. A christening customer recovered for birthdays is worth five new customers, and costs you nothing in ads.

Frequently asked questions

I already have a Facebook page with lots of cake photos. Why would I need a website?+

A Facebook page is great for people already following you, but the mom searching "christening cake + your town" on Google won't reach it. A website with occasion pages shows up in search, and a date-first order form turns a visitor into an order. Facebook brings people in; the website turns them into orders and answers the date question without you living in your inbox.

I'm not a photographer. How do I take cake photos that sell?+

You don't need expensive gear. Shoot by a window, in daylight, on a plain background (a clean table, a white wall), with the whole cake and one cut slice so the inside shows. The cut-slice photo sells more than ten photos of only the outside. With the maintenance package we refresh your gallery with new photos each time.

How do I manage already-booked dates so I don't accept two cakes for the same day?+

Through the site's order system you can mark full days, and the customer sees them blocked when picking a date. That way you stop getting ten requests for a weekend that's already full and don't have to decline manually. We've written how such a system works in our guide on online booking systems.

Should I put prices on the site or ask each customer separately?+

Custom cakes vary by servings and complexity, so you can't set one fixed price like a shop. But you can put a "from" on each occasion (e.g. christening cake from X lei / serving) and delivery pricing by area. A ballpark price filters out people who wouldn't order anyway and reassures the serious ones, who otherwise hesitate to ask.

How much does a website for my pastry shop cost?+

A page with gallery and order form (Landing) is €290–490, and a full site by occasion (Presentation) is €490–890. If you want online orders with a deposit and a full-dates calendar, the Shop package starts from €690. You'll find what drives the price in our guide on how much a website costs.
