How to Stop Competitor Clicks and Junk Traffic on Your Ads

A practical guide for local businesses: cut competitor clicks and irrelevant traffic on Google Ads without burning your budget.

You pay for every click on Google Ads, but not every click is a customer. Part of your budget leaks to competitors checking your offer, to browsers who never buy, and to searches that have nothing to do with what you sell. Watching the budget drain while the phone stays silent is frustrating.

The good news: most irrelevant traffic can be filtered out using settings you already have in your account — if you know where to look. It isn't about tricks, it's about campaign hygiene: negative keywords, correct targeting, and reading your reports. Below I walk you through, step by step, exactly what to touch so your money reaches people who are actually looking for you.

Why useless clicks happen (and what you can't control)

It helps to separate the sources of wasted traffic, because some are fixable and some aren't.

  • Competitors clicking to see your offer or, sometimes, deliberately to drain your budget.
  • Browsers looking for information, not services — they want a „how-to”, not a provider.
  • Keyword match types that are too broad, showing your ad on unrelated searches.
  • Accidental clicks, especially on mobile.

Google runs its own invalid-click detection and credits back what it flags as fraudulent. You'll never control everything — the realistic goal is to reduce the leak, not eliminate it. Be skeptical of any firm promising „guaranteed zero click fraud”; no such thing exists.

Negative keywords: your first line of defense

The most effective filtering starts with what triggers your ad. Open the Search terms report — it shows exactly what the person typed before clicking, not just the keywords you bid on.

Review it weekly and add to your negative keywords anything you don't sell:

  • Informational terms: „free”, „how to”, „tutorial”, „salary”, „jobs”, „second hand”.
  • Related services or products you don't offer.
  • Names of cities you don't serve.

Build a shared negative-keyword list applied across all campaigns so you don't rebuild it each time. Moving from broad match to phrase or exact match dramatically cuts unrelated impressions.

Block IPs and fix mistargeting

If a competitor clicks repeatedly, it often comes from the same IP. Under Campaign Settings > IP exclusions you can block a list of addresses. How to find them: your analytics or traffic reporting will show IPs with many visits and zero conversions. Block those — and your own company's IP too, so staff don't inflate your stats.

Then check geographic targeting. The Locations setting hides an option: by default, Google also shows your ad to people merely „interested” in your area, not only those physically there. Choose „Presence: people in your targeted locations” so you don't pay for clicks from across the country. Explicitly exclude areas you can't serve.

Settings that cut waste: devices, schedule, bidding

A few small adjustments make the difference at month's end:

  • Ad schedule: if you only answer the phone during the day, pause or lower bids overnight, when accidental clicks pile up.
  • Devices: if mobile brings clicks but not calls, lower your mobile bid adjustment.
  • Turn off „Search partners” and the Display network if you only want Google search — that's where a lot of low-quality traffic appears.
  • Watch „auto-applied recommendations”: Google may add broad keywords on its own that reopen the tap. Disable auto-apply.

No budget is too small to deserve these settings.

Filter from your page and offer too

Irrelevant traffic isn't only stopped in the account — the page people land on filters naturally as well. A clear page, with pricing or your service area visible up top, sends the wrong-fit browsers away before they waste a call.

At MPO Web Studio we work remotely with clients across the country, and before any engagement we build you a free demo — a real page, not a promise. When your ad points to a page that clearly states what you offer, to whom, and at what ballpark price, paid clicks turn into serious inquiries far more often.

If you want a second opinion on your campaign, or a landing page that qualifies visitors, message us on WhatsApp — we'll tell you honestly what to fix, with no hard sell.

Frequently asked questions

Do competitor clicks really cost me money?+

Yes. Any valid click on your ad is charged, no matter who clicks. Google detects and refunds some clearly invalid clicks, but it doesn't catch everything, so it's worth blocking suspicious IPs and watching your reports.

How often should I check the search terms report?+

Weekly at first, then every two weeks once your negative-keyword list stabilizes. New campaigns generate the most irrelevant searches in the first few weeks.

Is there a tool that stops click fraud completely?+

No, not completely. There are services that auto-block IPs, but none guarantee zero fraud. Combining negative keywords, IP exclusions, and correct targeting gives you the best real control.

Should I just use exact match for everything?+

Not necessarily. Exact match cuts waste but also volume. A good approach is to start tighter, then broaden in a controlled way on the keywords that bring real inquiries.
