A “before and after” gallery: how to build one that actually sells your service
If your trade has a visible result — renovations, aesthetics, car detailing — a before-and-after gallery is your best salesperson. Here's how to make it convince, not just exist.
In a trade with a visible result, your strongest sales argument isn't a paragraph about “quality and professionalism.” It's a single pair of photos: what that mouldy bathroom looked like on Monday morning, and what it looks like now. The person searching on their phone at night for a renovation tradesman, a beautician or a car detailer doesn't want promises — they want proof that you can turn something ugly into something they'd be proud of. The before-and-after gallery is exactly that proof, and if it's done badly, it sells against you.
We're MPO Web Studio, based in Cluj-Napoca in Cluj-Napoca, and we build sites for trades where the result is visible to the naked eye. Of all the sections of such a site, before-and-after is the one that closes the client. Below we show you how to build it so it convinces, not just exists.
Why before-and-after beats any text on the page
A paragraph saying “we've been laying tiles for over 10 years” asks you to trust its word. A photo of a crooked, ugly bathroom corner with cracked silicone, next to a photo of the same bathroom cleanly finished, asks for nothing — it demonstrates. The visitor's brain skips the text and looks at the difference. If the difference is big and believable, you've won half the sale before you've quoted a price.
This works especially in three kinds of trades:
- Renovations and remodelling — bathrooms, kitchens, façades, tiling, painting. The contrast is huge and emotional: people care about their home.
- Aesthetics and personal care — brows, nails, hair, facials, waxing. Here the “after” must be realistic, not retouched, or you lose trust on the spot.
- Car detailing and servicing — restored interiors, polished headlights, corrected paint, cleaned upholstery. A dirty car vs. a like-new one is one of the most satisfying visual comparisons there is.
The 5 rules of a pair that sells
A weak gallery is a pile of photos dumped together. One that sells follows a few simple rules:
- Same angle, same light. Shoot the “before” and “after” from the exact same spot. If the angle changes, the brain feels tricked and the difference stops counting.
- An honest “before,” not a dramatised one. Don't deliberately mess things up to make the transformation look bigger. People smell exaggeration. A real “before” is more convincing than a spectacular one.
- An “after” without aggressive filters. Especially in aesthetics: if the skin in the “after” looks plastic, the client expects something you can't deliver and leaves the salon disappointed.
- Context, not just a close-up. A photo of the whole bathroom says more than a corner. Show where the problem was and how the result fits the space.
- A few great ones, not fifty mediocre ones. Ten strong pairs beat a hundred done in a rush. Every weak photo drags the average down.
The rule we work by: each pair must answer, on its own, the question “would they do this for me too?” If it doesn't, it doesn't belong there.
Slider or two photos side by side?
Clients ask us this a lot. There are two ways to show the comparison:
- Interactive slider (drag a bar to reveal the “after” over the “before”) — striking, ideal for renovations and cars, where both photos come from the exact same frame.
- Two photos side by side — simpler, faster to load, suited to when the angles differ slightly or when you want to show many cases without slowing the page down.
The slider looks great, but if the two photos aren't perfectly aligned it ruins the whole effect. Our advice: use a slider only where you have identical frames; otherwise, two clean photos side by side do the job without the risk.
The details that make the difference (and that everyone forgets)
- Client consent. For aesthetics and private interiors, ask permission before publishing. One signed line keeps you out of trouble.
- Photos that load fast. A gallery of uncropped 8 MP photos makes the page crawl on a phone, and the visitor leaves. Optimise them — don't upload them raw.
- A one-line caption. “4 sqm bathroom, redone in 5 days” tells the story in a second and anchors the result in something concrete.
- A contact button right under the gallery. The moment someone is most convinced is right after they've seen the transformation. Don't send them hunting for how to reach you.
If you want to understand how this ties into the rest of your online presence, it's worth reading why you need a website and how much a website costs.
How much a site with a proper gallery costs
A well-made before-and-after gallery doesn't require a complicated site. Most of the time it fits nicely into a presentation site with a page dedicated to the portfolio.
| What you need | Suited for | Guide price |
|---|---|---|
| Landing page with a compact gallery | One service, one clear message | €290–490 |
| Presentation site with a portfolio page | Several services + gallery by category | €490–890 |
| Maintenance (we add new photos monthly) | Constant updates, no hassle | from €29/month |
The gallery is more powerful than any paid ad, because it's proof, not a promise. And a page that gathers new before-and-after pairs month after month becomes, over time, the best salesperson you have — one that works around the clock.

Frequently asked questions
How many before-and-after pairs should I put on the site?+
Better 8-12 strong pairs than 50 done in a rush. Every weak photo drags the average down and lowers your credibility. Pick the cases with the biggest contrast and the clearest transformation, and keep the rest for social media.
Do I need a professional photographer?+
Not necessarily. A recent phone, good daylight, and the discipline to shoot the “before” and “after” from the exact same angle give you very good results. What matters most isn't the gear, it's keeping the frame consistent between the two photos.
Is it legal to publish my clients' photos?+
For spaces and work (renovations, cars) it's usually straightforward, but for aesthetics and private interiors, ask the client's consent before publishing. A signed consent line or a clear WhatsApp message is enough to keep you out of trouble.
Interactive slider or two side-by-side photos — which is better?+
The slider is striking, but it only works if the two photos are from the exact same frame, perfectly aligned — suited to renovations and cars. If the angles differ slightly or you want to show many cases quickly, two clean photos side by side are safer.
How much does a site with a before-and-after gallery cost?+
A compact gallery fits on a landing page (€290–490). If you have several services and want a portfolio page by category, a presentation site (€490–890) is the right choice. Adding new photos monthly can be handled through maintenance, from €29/month.
