Service-area on Google without a visible address: how to hide your home yet stay on Maps

Work at your clients' homes and don't want your personal address public? Here's how to set up your Google service area correctly, step by step.

You're a plumber, electrician, painter or locksmith. You don't have a shop where people come to you — you go to them. And yet, when you set up your Google profile, you're asked for an address. The problem? You don't want the street and number where you live showing up publicly on Maps for anyone to see.

Good news: Google has a setting made exactly for you, called a "service-area business." It lets you hide your physical address and instead show the areas where you work — cities, towns, postal codes. In this article I'll walk you through how to set it up correctly, which mistakes get profiles suspended, and why it matters for your customers.

What a "service area" (SAB) actually means

Google splits businesses into two types. First: businesses with a physical location customers visit — a salon, a clinic, a shop. There the address must be visible, because people need to reach you.

The second type, a service-area business (SAB), is built for people who travel to the customer. Here the address stays hidden from the public, and in its place Google shows a list of areas you serve. Your profile still appears in searches and on Maps — only, instead of an exact pin on your house, it shows a general area.

Typical SAB trades: plumbers, electricians, cleaning, moving, pest control, appliance repair, at-home photography. If you go to the customer, you're an SAB.

The concrete steps: hide your address without vanishing from Maps

Everything is done from your Google Business Profile, which you manage for free:

  • When creating the profile, at the question "Do you want to add a location customers can visit?", answer NO.
  • Google will still ask for your real address — it needs it for verification. You enter it, but tick the option NOT to display it publicly.
  • Under "Service areas," add the cities, towns or postal codes where you work. You can add several.
  • Save and go through verification (usually video or a postcard).

If you already have a profile with the address showing: go to Edit info, remove the address from the public field, and fill in your service areas instead. The profile converts to an SAB automatically.

How wide to make the area — and why not to overdo it

Google lets you add several service areas, defined by place names or postal codes. It's tempting to throw in the whole county, plus the neighbouring ones, so you show up everywhere.

Don't. The good rule: cover only the areas you actually travel to within a reasonable time. Two reasons.

The first is credibility: Google notices where you actually have customers and reviews. An artificially inflated area doesn't help your ranking — it dilutes your local relevance.

The second is customers: if you show up in Town X but don't really go there, you get requests you turn down, waste time, and leave a bad impression. Better to dominate a realistic area than to be "everywhere and nowhere."

The mistakes that get your profile suspended

This is where many tradespeople get burned, out of not knowing. Avoid at all costs:

  • A fake or "borrowed" address. Don't use a friend's, a relative's, or a rented office you don't actually work from. Google checks, and a suspension is hard to recover from.
  • A PO box or mailbox-type address. These are banned as a business address.
  • Keywords in the business name. The name must be your real business name, not "Cheap 24/7 Plumber London." That's another common suspension trigger.
  • Duplicate profiles. One profile per real business.

The golden rule: what you put on Google must be true and consistent with what appears on your website, on Facebook and in other directories. Consistency of name, address (even hidden) and phone number matters a lot.

Why it's worth it and how we can help

A properly set-up SAB profile brings you customers from your area without exposing your private life. You show up when someone searches "electrician near me," you collect reviews, the phone rings — and your home address stays yours.

The good part is you can do the basic setup yourself, free, in about an hour. But if you want your profile working hand in hand with a website that turns visitors into customers, that's where we come in.

At MPO Web Studio we build websites for tradespeople and local businesses, delivered remotely nationwide, at a transparent price. We even make you a free demo before you pay anything — you see exactly how it would look, then you decide.

If you'd like a hand with your Google profile or a website, message us on WhatsApp. A short message, no strings attached.

Frequently asked questions

If I hide the address, do I still appear on Google Maps?+

Yes. Your profile stays on Maps and in searches. The difference is that the exact pin on your house is no longer shown — just a general coverage area. Customers still find you, call you and leave reviews.

Does Google really ask for my real address even if I hide it?+

Yes. For verification you need your real address — Google has to confirm the business exists. You enter it, but tick the box NOT to display it publicly. It stays visible only to Google, not to visitors.

Can I use a rented office or a relative's address to look more established?+

No. The address must be your real one, actually used. Fake, borrowed addresses or PO boxes lead to a profile suspension that's hard to recover from. It's worth doing it right from the start.

How many service areas can I add?+

You can add several, defined by localities or postal codes. The recommendation is to list only areas you realistically travel to. An inflated area doesn't help ranking and brings requests you'll turn down anyway.

I already have a profile with the address showing. Can I hide it now?+

Yes. Go into your Google Business Profile, to Edit info, remove the address from the public field and fill in service areas. The profile converts to a service-area business automatically, without losing your reviews.
