Use a vehicle selector, not a forest of pages

The right way for a customer to reach their part isn't ten levels of category navigation — it's a selector: pick the make, then the model, then the generation and engine. Even better, let them search by license plate or VIN, which auto-fills every field.

The selector filters your existing catalog based on compatibility attributes. It doesn't create new pages, it just shows the products that fit.

The golden rule: only create such a page if it meets two conditions at once.

  • There's real demand (people actually search that term)
  • There's real stock, with several matching products

In practice you programmatically generate pages for the popular combinations in your catalog and leave the rest to the selector. That gets you to a few hundred valuable pages, not millions of ghost pages. Each dedicated page gets a title, a description and possibly model-specific FAQs, so it's useful rather than an empty container.

What to do with filter pages: noindex, canonical and proper 404s

Filters generate endless URLs: color, price, brand, combined together. If you let Google index all of them, you flood your site with duplicates.

  • Purely navigational filter pages get noindex or a canonical to the main category
  • Combinations with no results should NOT return an indexable "0 products" page; ideally a 404 or a redirect, not a soft 404
  • In your sitemap you include only the pages you actually want indexed, not everything the app can generate

The difference between a filter (navigation, not indexed) and a landing page (content, indexed) must be decided explicitly, not left to chance. This is where most parts shops lose: they generate everything, index everything and wonder why nothing climbs in Google.
