How to Ask for Google Reviews After Every Salon Appointment (and Actually Get Them)
A simple, repeatable process that turns happy clients into real Google reviews — without ever feeling pushy.
Everyone knows Google reviews matter. When someone searches „hair salon near me,” they almost always pick the place with lots of recent reviews and a reply under each one. Your problem isn't that you lack happy clients — you have them. The problem is that their happiness stays inside the salon and never makes it onto Google.
The reason is simple: your client leaves delighted, but busy. She means to leave a review, then forgets. It's not bad faith, it's just everyday life. The good news is you don't need luck and you don't need to nag. You need a process: the right moment, a short message, and a link that opens the review form in two taps. In this article I'll show you the exact process, word for word.
Timing matters more than the message
Most reviews are lost because you ask too late. Three days on, your client no longer remembers how good her hair looked.
The golden moment is at the very end of the appointment, when she's looking in the mirror and loves what she sees. That's when the emotion peaks. You don't ask for the review on the spot — you ask for permission:
- „So glad you love it. I'll text you later with a link, in case you have a minute to leave a note on Google. It helps me a lot.”
Then you send the actual message the same day or the next morning, while the memory is fresh. Not a week later. The warm window is short and closes fast.
Make "ask for the review" a fixed step, not a moment of inspiration
If you only ask when you remember, you'll rarely ask. It has to become part of closing out the appointment — exactly like taking payment.
Pick a clear trigger and glue the step to it:
- After the client pays → note in your book or phone „send review link.”
- In the evening, at closing → send messages to every happy client from that day.
If you use online booking or keep a list of client numbers, prepare the message in advance, saved as a template. Don't improvise every time. The point isn't to write a lot — it's to never skip the step. A boring process you always do beats a brilliant plan you do once.
The direct link: the difference between "I'll do it now" and "later"
This is where most salons lose the game. They send „leave us a Google review” with no link. Now the client has to search for the salon, scroll, find the button — and gives up.
Google gives you a short link that opens the review window directly, with the stars ready to tap. You'll find it in your Google Business Profile, under „Get more reviews.” Copy it once and use it in every message.
Tips:
- Shorten it with a link shortener so it looks clean.
- Turn it into a QR code and place it at reception, next to the till. Anyone paying with phone in hand scans on the spot.
- Test it yourself first, from another phone, so you see exactly what the client sees.
What to write in the message (templates you can copy)
A good message is short, personal, and has a single thing to do. No „we would appreciate your feedback in order to improve our services.” That sounds like a robot.
WhatsApp / SMS, a few hours after the visit:
- „Hi [Name]! So happy you loved how it turned out. If you have a minute, a Google review would help me hugely get found by more people: [link]. Thank you! — [Your name]”
For a loyal client:
- „[Name], I know you've been coming to me for a while and I really value that. If it's easy for you, a note on Google would mean a lot to the salon: [link]”
Rules: use the name, say why it helps (getting found), leave the link at the end. Don't send the same message three times — once is a request, three times is pressure.
What NOT to do: mistakes that can cost you your profile
Reviews have to be genuine. Here's what to avoid — not just out of good manners, but because Google penalizes it:
- Don't offer discounts or freebies in exchange for reviews. It breaks Google's rules and you can lose the reviews or even your profile.
- Don't ask only for 5-star reviews and don't filter clients („only leave one if you'd give us five stars”). Ask for the honest opinion.
- Don't write the reviews yourself and don't rope in relatives who were never clients. It shows and it hurts.
- Don't collect dozens in one day from the same wifi — an unnatural spike looks fake.
And the most important step many forget: reply to every review, even a simple „thank you.” It shows you're present and encourages others to write. To a weaker review, respond calmly and professionally — future clients mostly read how you react.
Automate the boring part (this is where we can help)
The process above works with a pen in your hand. But once you have dozens of clients a week, sending messages by hand becomes the first thing you skip when you're tired.
That's what's worth automating: a system that, after each appointment, sends the review-link message by itself at the right moment, and collects your reviews in one place. Without you having to remember.
At MPO Web Studio we build exactly this kind of thing for salons: a website that shows up well on Google, plus the review process set up properly. We work remotely, nationwide, we build you a free demo first so you see the result before you pay anything, and pricing is transparent, no surprises.
If you'd like to see what it would look like for your salon, drop us a message on WhatsApp. We'll answer human to human.
Frequently asked questions
How soon after the appointment should I ask for the review?+
Ideally the same day or the next morning, while your client still remembers how good her hair looked. After a few days the memory fades and your chances drop sharply. Tell her at the end of the visit that you'll send a link, then send it that very day.
Can I offer a discount to thank someone for a review?+
No. Google's rules ban rewarding reviews, and you risk having them deleted or your profile suspended. Ask for the opinion because it helps the salon, not in exchange for something. A sincere thank-you and good work are enough.
What do I do if I get a negative review?+
Reply calmly, briefly and professionally, without getting defensive. Thank them for the feedback, acknowledge what can be improved, and invite them to contact you directly. Future clients mostly read how you react — a mature reply to a weak review can matter more than ten stars.
Where do I get the direct review link?+
From your Google Business Profile, under „Get more reviews.” Google generates a short link that opens the star window directly. Copy it once, shorten it if you want it to look clean, and make a QR code for reception too.
I don't have time to send messages by hand. What now?+
Save a template in your phone so it takes a few seconds per client, or fully automate it with a system that sends the message by itself after each appointment. At MPO we can set this up for your salon — message us on WhatsApp and we'll show you a free demo.
