How Much You Lose at Checkout: The Real Causes of Cart Abandonment on Romanian Payments
Customers fill the cart, reach the payment step, and vanish. Here is why it happens in Romania and how to fix each leak.
You have traffic. People come in, browse, add products to the cart. They reach the payment step... and disappear. If you have ever looked at your stats and seen more carts started than orders completed, it is not bad luck and it is not "the same for everyone." It is a leak you can see and fix.
Checkout abandonment is the most expensive kind of lost customer. Someone who quits while browsing may never have intended to buy. But someone who reached the payment step had made up their mind, card in hand or wallet open. You walked them to the door and they turned back at the threshold. Let us look at the real causes, specific to the Romanian market, and what to do about each one.
Cash on delivery or card: you lose people when you skip their option
In Romania, cash on delivery (ramburs) is still preferred by many buyers, especially outside the big cities and on a first purchase from an unknown shop. Distrust of paying by card online is real, and one article won't change it.
The classic mistake goes both ways:
- You only offer card, and the customer who wanted cash on delivery closes the tab.
- You only offer cash on delivery, and the city customer who wanted to finish fast with Apple Pay or card gets annoyed.
The answer is not a philosophy, it is to offer both. Give the customer card, cash on delivery, and if you can, quick digital-wallet payment. Every missing method is an audience segment you hand to a competitor.
The most common steps where the cart breaks
Checkout is not one moment, it is several steps, and each has its own leak. The places you lose people most often:
- Forced account creation. You ask for a password before they can buy. Many quit here. Always offer guest checkout.
- Too many fields. Every extra box is a chance to abandon. Ask only what you need to ship and invoice.
- Shipping cost shown only at the end. They think they are paying one amount, then see another at the last step and feel tricked. Show shipping early.
- No clear summary. If they can't see exactly what they pay and what they get, they hesitate.
- A checkout that resets. It throws an error, sends them back to the start, and wipes what they filled in. This is where they leave for good.
3-D Secure: the leak you cannot see
In the European Union, payment authentication (3-D Secure / SCA) is mandatory. In practice, after the customer taps "pay," they are sent to their bank's app or get an SMS code to confirm.
This is where money leaks silently. If the redirect is clunky, if the session expires while they hunt for their phone, if the return page gets lost on mobile, or if a declined card gives no explanation and no "try again" button, the customer assumes the site is broken and quits.
What to check:
- The return from the bank app lands back on the order, not a blank page.
- A declined card shows a clear message and the option to retry or change method.
- The whole flow is smooth on a phone, not just on a laptop.
The trust signals almost every Romanian site forgets
The customer hovers over the button and asks: "who am I actually paying?" If the site doesn't answer fast, they back off. What must be visible and correct:
- Company details: name, registration number (CUI), address. A shop with no identity looks like a trap.
- Return policy. In Romania, an online buyer has a legal right to withdraw within 14 days. Say it clearly, don't bury it.
- A link to the ANPC consumer authority and the SOL dispute-resolution platform, as the law requires.
- A secure connection (https) and, at payment, the processor's logos.
- A phone number and a real way to reach you.
None of these sells on its own. Together they say: "this is a real company, you can pay in peace."
How to diagnose it yourself, without an agency
You don't need anyone to find where the cart leaks. Do it yourself:
- In Google Analytics, look at the checkout funnel: how many start paying, how many finish, at which step the number drops.
- Place a real order yourself, from your own phone, on mobile data, not the office wi-fi. You feel the exact friction your customer feels.
- Pay with a real card, a small amount, so you go through the full 3-D Secure flow.
- Ask two or three friends or customers to order in front of you and stay quiet. Watch where they stall and what they mutter.

Frequently asked questions
How fast will I see results from fixing checkout?+
Usually fast, because these are people who already wanted to buy. Once you remove a big friction, like forced account creation or shipping hidden until the end, completed orders rise without any new traffic. It is the cheapest growth you can make.
Do I have to offer card payment, or can I stay on cash on delivery only?+
You can stay on cash on delivery, but you lose city customers who want to finish fast and those who don't want to wait for the courier with cash. Ideally you have both. Cash on delivery reassures the new buyer, card suits the one in a hurry. Every missing method is an audience handed to a competitor.
Why do card payments fail even though the processor is set up correctly?+
Most often it is the 3-D Secure authentication step. The customer is sent to their bank, and if the redirect is clunky, the session expires, or the return lands on a blank page, the payment fails with no explanation. Test the whole flow from a phone, with a real card, and check what happens on a declined card.
Do I need a new site or can I fix the existing checkout?+
It depends on the platform. Often it is solved within your current site: add guest checkout, show shipping early, clear out useless fields, fix the mobile flow. A new site only makes sense if the old platform is slow or can't support the payment methods you need.
How do I know for sure which step loses customers?+
The checkout funnel in Google Analytics shows how many reach each step and where the number drops sharply. That is your main leak. Combine the numbers with an order you place yourself on a phone, and the problem usually becomes obvious in a few minutes.
