Gomag vs Shopify: Is the Romanian Platform Worth It for Your Store?

An honest comparison of Gomag and Shopify for Romanian shops: real costs, couriers, invoicing, SEO, and when each one wins.

If you're opening an online store in Romania, you hit the same question fast: the local platform Gomag or the global giant Shopify? Both get a store live without you writing code. The real question isn't "which is better" — it's which fits how you sell, who you sell to, and the budget you're working with.

This article isn't selling you anything. It shows you exactly where the two differ: integration with Romanian couriers and AWBs, invoicing and e-Factura, language and support, real monthly costs, and SEO. By the end you'll be able to decide for yourself — or at least know the right questions to ask whoever builds your store.

What they are, briefly, and who they're built for

Gomag is a Romanian SaaS platform built specifically for the local market. It ships with native courier integrations (Fan Courier, Sameday, DPD, Cargus), Romanian invoicing, local payments (Netopia, PayU, EuPlatesc) and support in Romanian. In practice it solves, out of the box, things that matter daily in Romania.

Shopify is the global standard, used by millions of stores. It's extremely solid, fast, with a huge ecosystem of themes and apps. But it's built for an international market: many local functions (automatic AWB, e-Factura, RON payments) come through third-party apps, sometimes paid separately.

In short: Gomag is "local by default," Shopify is "global by default, local through extensions."

Couriers, AWB and delivery: where Gomag clearly wins

This is the biggest practical difference for a Romanian store.

  • Gomag: you generate the AWB straight from the dashboard, print the label, track the parcel, handle cash-on-delivery — all natively integrated with local couriers.
  • Shopify: shipping with Romanian couriers happens through third-party apps (AWB connectors from the App Store). They work well, but you add one more piece that needs configuring and, sometimes, a monthly fee.

If you ship dozens of cash-on-delivery orders a day with a local courier, Gomag's integrated flow saves you real time every single day. If your volume is small or you also ship abroad, the difference matters less.

Invoicing, e-Factura and the accounting side

Romania has specific rules: e-Factura through SPV, VAT, compliant invoices. This matters enormously if you don't want your store creating accounting headaches.

  • Gomag has native or easy integrations with Romanian invoicing software (Oblio, SmartBill, FGO) and is built with local rules in mind.
  • On Shopify, RO-compliant invoicing and e-Factura are still handled through external apps or connectors — feasible, but more to assemble.

Honest tip: whatever the platform, ask your accountant first how they want to receive invoices. The platform choice should follow your accounting flow, not the other way around.

Real costs: not just the subscription

Don't compare only the price on the pricing page. The real cost of a store includes subscription + apps + payment fees + theme + possibly a developer.

  • Shopify: the subscription is billed in dollars/euros, so it depends on the exchange rate. You add apps (many with their own monthly fee) and, if you don't use Shopify Payments — which is limited in Romania — you can face extra per-transaction fees.
  • Gomag: priced in lei, with many local functions included from the start, so usually fewer separately-paid apps for the RO market.

Calculate over 12 months, not per month. A cheap subscription with 5 paid apps on top can end up costing more than an apparently bigger plan.

SEO, speed and how far you can take the store

Both platforms can rank well in Google — SEO depends more on content, speed and structure than on the platform's brand. Run from anyone promising you "guaranteed #1": nobody can guarantee that.

  • Shopify: very fast global infrastructure, huge ecosystem of modern themes, ideal if you want to grow a lot or sell internationally.
  • Gomag: covers SEO needs well for a Romanian store and is simpler to run in Romanian.

The real limit of both is that you're inside a closed system: you customize within the platform's boundaries. When you need something truly bespoke — unique design, specific integrations, performance to the millimeter — you may outgrow what a template offers.

How to decide — and where we can help

The simple rule:

  • Selling mostly in Romania, with cash-on-delivery and local couriers, want everything in lei and support in Romanian? Gomag shortens the road.
  • Want to sell internationally too, looking for premium themes and a huge app ecosystem? Shopify is the natural choice.
  • Want something unique, fast and fully your own, without a template's limits? Then a custom-built site is worth it.

At MPO Web Studio we work remotely across the whole country and can build you a free demo before you pay anything — you see exactly how your store looks before deciding. We'll tell you honestly when Gomag or Shopify is enough for you, and when custom is genuinely worth it. Message us on WhatsApp and we start from what you sell, not from whichever platform is trendy.

Frequently asked questions

Gomag or Shopify for a small store just starting out?+

If you sell in Romania with cash-on-delivery and local couriers, Gomag gives you invoicing and AWB out of the box, so you launch faster without extra apps. Shopify is excellent, but early on you'll configure more external integrations for the RO market.

Can I move my store from one platform to the other later?+

Yes, but migration (products, customers, orders, SEO redirects) takes work and planning so you don't lose Google positions. It's better to choose right from the start. If you do migrate, do it with someone who preserves URLs and redirects.

Which is cheaper long term?+

It depends on your apps and fees, not just the subscription. Gomag is priced in lei with many local functions included; Shopify can get pricier through paid apps and exchange rates. Calculate total cost over 12 months, including payments and couriers.

Does either guarantee me the #1 spot on Google?+

No, and don't believe anyone who promises it. Google ranking depends on content, speed, structure and site authority, not the platform. Both can rank well if the store is built properly.

Do I absolutely need a platform like these, or can I have my own site?+

It depends on your needs. Gomag/Shopify are fast and convenient, but you stay within their limits. If you want unique design, specific integrations or maximum performance, a custom-built site may fit better — we can show you both options in a free demo.
