Title Tags and Meta Descriptions: How to Write Them for More Clicks

The two lines you see in Google decide your clicks. Here's how to write them so people choose you instead of the competitor next to you.

You can rank on Google's first page and still hear nothing from the phone. The reason is simple: people don't click a position, they click a title and a description. Those two blue-and-grey lines in the results are actually your free advert - and most business owners leave them blank or fill them in at random.

The good news is you don't need a specialist to get them right. The title tag and meta description are short pieces of text you fully control. In this article I'll show you exactly how to write them so the person searching "hair salon Cluj" or "plumber near me" chooses you - and which mistakes quietly steal your clicks without you noticing.

What these two lines actually are

The title tag is the bold, blue title you click in Google. The meta description is the grey text underneath it. Both are separate from the page's actual content - you set them yourself, for each individual page.

It helps to understand the difference from the big heading on the page (the H1). Your page might say "Welcome!" while Google shows "Hair Salon in Cluj-Napoca - Fast Booking". Those are two different things.

Think of them as a small poster in a crowded shop window: you get one line and one sentence to convince a passer-by to step in. The rest of the competition is right beside you, on the very same screen.

How to write a title people click

A good title answers three questions instantly: what you are, where you are, and why choose you. Keep it short - around 50-60 characters, otherwise Google cuts it off with "...".

A formula that almost always works:

  • service + city (e.g. "Dental Clinic Cluj")
  • one concrete benefit ("online booking", "no waiting lists")
  • your business name, at the end

Put the important words first, not last - they show up on mobile too, where space is even tighter. Avoid identical titles across every page; each page deserves its own. And write for a human, not a robot: "plumber plumbing services plumber Cluj" repels, it doesn't attract.

The meta description: your advert under the title

The meta description doesn't lift your Google ranking directly - but it helps you win the click, and clicks matter. You get roughly 150-160 characters before it's cut off.

Use them like a tiny sales pitch: say what you offer, add a reason to trust you, and end with a clear call - "Call us", "Get a quote", "See our hours". Naturally include the word the person searched for; Google bolds it, and the eye goes straight to it.

One honest detail: Google sometimes rewrites the description, especially if yours is empty or doesn't match the query. Don't panic if you see different text - write it well anyway, because most of the time it uses yours.

The mistakes that steal your clicks

Most pages lose clicks for boring, easily fixable reasons:

  • Empty titles, or ones auto-set by the theme ("Home", "Page 1") - they say nothing.
  • The same title and description across the whole site - Google can't tell which page to show.
  • Titles too long, cut in the middle, losing exactly the convincing part.
  • Filler text like "Welcome to our website" - takes up space without selling.
  • Empty promises like "Guaranteed #1 on Google". Nobody can guarantee that; it reads as unserious.

The simple rule: if you read your own result among five others, would you click it? If not, rewrite it.

How to check and improve in practice

You don't have to guess. Open Google Search Console (free) and look at pages with lots of impressions but few clicks - those are exactly the ones with weak titles and descriptions. Rewrite them, then watch whether anything changes over a few weeks.

A quick test, no tools needed: search for yourself in Google, on your phone, and read your result like a stranger would. Does it grab you? Or do you scroll past it?

At MPO Web Studio we handle this text for every page of the sites we build - and because we work remotely, across the whole country, we can build you a free demo first so you see the result before paying anything. If you'd like a second pair of eyes on your current titles, message us on WhatsApp and we'll look together.

Frequently asked questions

How many characters can a title tag have?+

As a practical guide, stick to 50-60 characters. Google actually measures in pixels (roughly 600), so a title with wide letters may be cut sooner. Put the important words first so they show even if the rest gets trimmed.

Why does Google show different text than what I wrote?+

Google sometimes rewrites the title or description if it thinks another version fits the search better, or if yours is empty or generic. You can't force it, but if you write clear, relevant text, it uses yours most of the time.

Does the meta description help me rank higher?+

Not directly - it's not a ranking factor. But it helps you win the click among results, and more clicks make your listing more attractive over time. It's worth writing well for people, not for the algorithm.

Do I really need the city in my title?+

If you work locally - salon, clinic, garage, plumber - then yes, almost always. People search "something + city", and seeing the city in your title tells them you're near. If you sell nationwide, the city matters less.

How long until the new text shows in Google?+

Usually from a few days to a few weeks, however long Google takes to re-index the page. You can speed it up a little by requesting re-indexing in Search Console, but you still need patience to see the effect on clicks.
