Hotel and Guesthouse SEO for More Direct Bookings

A guesthouse, hotel or short-stay apartment gets bookings from Google when guests search for an area plus what they want there: a stay in the Apuseni Mountains with a hot tub, a guesthouse with a pool near Cluj. To show up, you need a Google Business Profile with your real amenities, a page for each amenity and occasion, local guides written by someone who knows the area, and a booking engine on your own site.

The goal is not to drop Booking.com but to grow the share of bookings that come straight to you, now that the platform can no longer stop you offering a better price on your own site.

Area plus amenity: “Apuseni stay with a hot tub”

Guests search for an area plus an amenity or an occasion. Romanian Autocomplete suggests „cazare apuseni cu ciubăr” (Apuseni stay with hot tub), „cazare apuseni cu piscină” (with pool), „cazare apuseni cu vouchere de vacanță” (accepts holiday vouchers), „cazare apuseni cu demipensiune” (half board), „pensiune cu piscină încălzită” (heated pool), „hotel cluj napoca airport”. Each can become a page, if the amenity really exists.

For lodging searches, Google usually shows hotels on a map with prices and availability, alongside booking platforms and the properties' own websites. Through free booking links, your rates can appear at no cost in Search and Maps, provided the link leads to a direct booking on your own site, not an intermediary.

Since 14 November 2024, Booking.com, designated a gatekeeper under the EU Digital Markets Act, can no longer impose parity clauses. So you may offer better prices or terms on your own site than on the platform. That is why SEO and your own booking engine make economic sense.

Foreign guests search in their own language. If you host visitors from abroad, each language needs its own pages on separate URLs, linked with hreflang, not an automatic translation button.

Free booking links, amenity pages and local guides

In the SEO Foundation we work on two fronts: fixing what exists and planning the site's structure:

  • your Google Business Profile for lodging: the right category, your real amenities (pool, hot tub, parking, breakfast, pets allowed), current photos, and a check of what you need for your rates to appear through free booking links;
  • structured data with the property's address and amenities;
  • a page for each amenity and occasion you actually offer (hot tub, heated pool, half board, New Year's Eve, Easter, holiday vouchers) and real local guides: trails, sights, distances from the property, what to do when it rains. In the Foundation we plan the structure and fix existing pages; how many new pages and guides we write is agreed in the offer;
  • the structure for foreign languages (a separate URL per language and hreflang), quoted separately if you host guests from abroad.

On Local, the profile shows your real season: when you are open, reception hours and new photos as the seasons change, with your name, address and phone number the same on booking portals too.

On Growth, articles follow the calendar: the New Year's Eve, Easter or summer page goes live months ahead, not in the peak week.

Stars you don't have, old photos, links to intermediaries

  • Stars or daisies you do not have. In Romania, lodging may only operate with a classification certificate (Order 65/2013), and agritourism guesthouses, for example, are rated in daisies, not stars. We do not write “4 stars” or a comfort level your certificate does not show.
  • “We accept holiday vouchers” when you do not. We only build a voucher page if the property really accepts them.
  • Old photos or photos from elsewhere. Rooms, pool and view must look as they do now; misleading photos are an unfair commercial practice (Romanian Law 363/2007).
  • Fake, bought or discount-for-review reviews. They break Google's rules, and fake reviews are also banned by Law 363/2007 as amended by Emergency Ordinance 58/2022. We do not do it.
  • A booking link that goes to an intermediary. For free booking links, Google requires the link to lead to a direct booking with the property.
  • Copy-paste location pages. Near-identical “stay in [village]” pages do not help; an area page needs real information about that area.

We do not promise “zero commissions”: platforms remain a useful channel, especially for guests who do not know you yet.

New Year's Eve pages are prepared in summer

The Google profile, structured data and technical fixes are done in 2–4 weeks, while a new lodging page usually needs 3–6 months to climb.

That sets the calendar. The New Year's Eve page is prepared in summer and the summer page in winter or early spring, so it has time to be indexed before guests start searching. If we start in peak season, the first season is mostly preparation for the next one.

The monthly report shows what comes from Google (views, calls, visits); direct bookings you compare season to season in your booking engine.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO worth it if I already get bookings on Booking.com?
Yes, as a second channel, not a replacement. Since November 2024 Booking.com can no longer impose rate parity, so you may offer better terms on your own site. SEO and your own booking engine help you grow the share of direct bookings without leaving the platforms.
What are Google's free booking links?
They let your rates and availability appear for free in Search and Maps. The link has to lead to a direct booking on your own site. Rates usually reach Google through the booking system you use, so we check together whether yours can do that.
I get guests from abroad. Do I need a multilingual site?
If they are a real segment, yes: one version per language, on a separate URL, linked with hreflang and checked by a person. Two languages done well beat five machine-translated ones.
Can I say my guesthouse has 4 stars?
Only if that is what your classification certificate says (Order 65/2013). The site may only show the level on the certificate: agritourism guesthouses, for example, are rated in daisies, not stars. Anything else is misleading advertising.
